Trying again....
has ANYONE done relining instead of rebarreling? if so, who did it and what were the results?

Relining can be done very professionally and the end result is barely noticeable.
However, the process is not without potential problems, setup is very critical to accuracy, and this is often lost . There are different ways to bed the liner, ask before you buy to be sure you get what your after. A liner can be just rifling, the old chamber left as is, or it can be rifling and chamber. You can bore a barrel from the rear and leave the crown unmolested this is very hard to spot if done correctly. Most just bore it all the way through. Some try to cap the crown to hide the new lining. I would ask for references and actually contact them before sending my gun off to an unknown. Hope this helps with your question Vern |
The last shop that I knew about that relined Luger barrels was an old gunsmith in Mentor Ohio and he retired or died several years ago. No one that I know has filled this niche in Luger collecting that I know of.
I know how to do this, and I would do it myself if I could find time, but time is a precious comodity right now... If I invested in the tools, it would be a long time to reach the break even point. I may do it when I decide to stop working in a couple of years... or sooner if I can break free of the other support issues in my life. If you find someone to do this, ask all the right questions and get/give a written contract to make sure you get what you are after. Once you have it done, please report back with your satisfaction with the results. Thanks.-- |
