1937 Luger Info
 

Hey all...
I usually spend more time in other gun forums, they told me this is the spot for Luger info... My uncle has a Luger and he was looking for more info on it. I think he plans on selling it but it does not fire. He says when he pulls the trigger nothing happens. I told him to not get it fixed yet. As far as I can tell, all the number match, but I am not sure where all the stampings would be located. Thanks guys...

He said the gun shop thought that the part marked 58 in the pic above was broken causing it to not fire...

Does anybody know if this is the correct holster for this pistol? He actually has another one but he forgot which pistol was in the holster.

The holster is for an Artillery Luger.
Unfortunately, the gun you picture never left the factory that way. The long barrel is not original to the gun. It may still be a good shooter, but it has lost much of its collector value.
The part your gunshop people pointed out as perhaps being the culprit in the failure to fire is actually the extractor. A broken extractor may prevent a round from being properly removed from the chamber after firing, but will not influence a fire/no fire situation.
You need to have a competent gunsmith, with experience with Lugers determine why it will not fire.

The holster is a reproduction.

The barrel is stamped "7.65"...He's not trying to shoot 9mm cartridges in it, is he??? :eek:

Any other markings on that barrel??? How about a side pic of the front sight???

Might be a good idea to post your location; someone knowledgeable may be able to recommend a member familiar with Lugers close to you...

Thanks for the info guys. The gun is in the Minneapolis area. Any recommendations for a good smith to look at it?
As far as the extractor, that was what I thought, it would only affect ejecting the spent case, but I did not know for sure.
If the gun was in working condition, any idea of approximately what it would be worth?

I would guess that it would sell in CA for $6-$750. But a lot of people do not understand lugers.

There have been people on this site looking for a "target" Luger...Yours might be the basis for a paper punching Luger...Add a micrometer rear sight, a set of sculpted grips, and some careful tuning, and it just might turn out to be an accurate shooter... :)

I would say in its present condition $550-$650 as many folks would want to "tinker" with it.

With the problem fixed probably $700-$800

I would think that it could be several things, and yes, someone who KNOWSlugers should mess with it; most gunsmiths won't know what to check for.

Firing pin tip broken
Sideplate misalingment and it won't fire (most likely for my guns that I've had problems with)
Dirty as hell on the inside and things are just gummed.

Might be cheaper to sell as -is ??

In it's present condition as pictured, the safty bar is blocking the sear.
