First Issue grips - serialized?
 

I just purchased a First Issue Luger. The grips look to be the proper age but they are not serialized to the gun. Were the grips on First Issue Lugers serialized? I sure appreciate the expertise of eveyone on the forum. I will post pictures as soon as the luger arrives.

Hi Hal, I don't know if anyone has done a study on this subject, but for what they're worth, my observations are as follows. 1st Issue unnumbered, 1910 to 1916 numbered, 1917 & 1918 erratic. I only own two 1st issues (both of which appear to have original grips), so perhaps someone with more experience than me will chip in. Regards, Norm

'08 first militaries numbered 1597, 794a, 2135a and 2607b have unnumbered grips.

P, Since the 1st issue military lugers were numbered in the commerical style, the grips should be unnumbered. The military placement of proofs and serials was not finalized until 1910. TH

They have of brand the number "84 and one "0 in the left hilt

Thanks for the great feedback. The luger came today and I am in the process of getting some pictures together. I noticed that one grip had a 0 on it and the other D on it. One more question, the firing pin is also unnumbered. it looks to be original by the patina and style. Does anyone know if the firing pins were numbered at this time? Also, I apologize for having to ask, but unfortuantely all my references are in NY and I am in Fl right now. Again, thanks to all. -- Hal
