@ the range
I went to the NRA range today and bought a (white) box of Winchester (black lettering) 9mm NATO (124 grain FMJ)
The recoil was harder and every 1-2 rounds the Luger jammed. I tried several rounds and then gave up. Then I switched back to my regular Winchester White Box ammo with 115 grain bullets and the gun shot smooth and flawless like always. I shot Magtech, Remington UMS, American Eagle and never experienced this before. (They all had 115grain bullets). I didn't know that a 124 grain bullet makes such a big difference. Is a 124 grain bullet just too heavy for a Luger? |
Hi:
No, your problem is not with the weight of the bullet, but rather the charge. Current NATO Specifications: 121 grain bullet at 1,260 fps. The NATO load is some 17% hotter than the DWM WWI and later German Army loads. Stick with the lighter loads, or you might easily damage your fine Luger. Sieger |
My luger is finicky about charge load too. I found that reduced loads (4.0gn about 5% less than the recommended dose of TiteGroup behind a 115gn FMJ) worked reliably.

Especially the Remington UMC ammo is very soft (and 1-2 mm shorter than other 9mm Luger ammo). I had the best results with regular Winchester White Box ammo. I'll give the box with the 9mm NATO rounds to my buddy. I've just shot a few rounds of the 9mm NATO ammo with my Luger. |
Hi Again:
Over all length also matters quite a bit in that greatly slanted Luger magazine. Best, with round nosed bullets is 1.169 to 1.173 inches if you are going to be firing a full magazine of 8 rounds. Sieger |
