white lettering?

what do you guys use to enhance the lettering and proof marks on your lugers?
Something I have wondered about.

It's chalk/crayon. It is just for highlighting the markings and numbers to make them better visible on photos. It is not permanent. Only the lettering "GESICHERT" near the safety is white on some models. When I was new to Lugers I had exactly the same question.

The one I have is called a Lacquer Stick or something close. I've been told that they are available from Brownells, although that is not where I got mine about a century ago...

yes, laquer sticks last for years, I bought 2 or 3 of them at one time; essentially to save on shipping.

chalk is slightly abrasive, so I don't use it.

Is this the stuff?

Highly specialized compound wipes on to bring out stamped or engraved impressions on ALL smooth surfaces. Ideal for guns, parts, accessories. Semi-solid in stick form when used, but soon hardens and becomes permanent.

Yes, laquer sticks from Brownells is commonly used to highlight numbers, proofs, dates etc. However it is not permanent. It is very easy to remove with Hoppes and a toothbrush. It does not affect the bluing. Bill

And, applying white laquer on markings not only makes reading easier, it does make the gun look at least 1% fresher or newer. At least that's my feeling.

I used a white grease crayon from Wal-Mart, used to repair/highlight the lettering on whitewall tires..."Slime Tire Marker"...

Thanks for this info, I just ordered some and will be "dressing up" the lettering when it arrives.

Yellow crayon on the "Gesichert" lettering, right?

Cheers.

Hello Porta!
I was wondering about your name. Have you been reading the books..?
Interesting, but if truth? I`m a fan anyway.

Just how permanent is it?

Mauser720 05-15-2010 07:03 PM

Pumaonly -

The Brownell's Lacquer-Stik is not "permanent" in spite of their claim - please see Bill Lyon's post above.

I would think "Gesichert" was originally in white. But it does show some amber color tone on guns. Actually, if it's too bright white, I would think it's not original (similarly, if "9" on grip is too fresh vivid red, it's most likely recently re-painted).

But I still believe it was white initially, and gradually turned to amber color over years.

Experts please correct me if I am wrong on this.

Edward Tinker 05-15-2010 09:50 PM

yes, you can get a yellowish aged white that makes it look old.

white looks a bit odd... but was original

Hello Jussi,

Not to go off-topic, but yes Porta is a reference to "Sven Hassel" books.
Probably the grim start of my own decline into owning one of these unique and elegant pistols; I have the whole set in lurid-corgi covers (somewhere).

So perhaps not so "off-topic" then ..... :)

Cheers,
Matt
