Good information

I just downloaded Edward Tinker's FAQ -- all 31 pages of it -- and put it in booklet form as a guide on my next Luger shopping trip.

Let me see if I have this straight: Mauser Code 42 Lugers were produced in the early and mid-1930s; the S/42s were produced in the late 1930s; the byfs were produced in 1941 and 1942 when Luger production ceased.

Where does the Mauser "banner" Luger make its appearance? Also, what does byf stand for?

Hi James, S/42 from 1934 to mid 1939, 42 from mid 1939 to mid 1941, and byf from mid 1941 to the end of Mauser Luger production in mid 1942. All three are code for Mauser. Regards, Norm

Hi James,

S/42 was a the manufacterer's code assigned to Mauser in 1934 beginning with the "K" date Luger. S/42 was used until early Spring 1939. Then was changed to 42 until February 1941. Then the code was changed to "byf" until mid-1942. "byf" is simply a letter code assigned to Mauser.

Banner Lugers were the Commercial variation produced simultaniously with the military from 1938-1942.

Ron

I must be getting old and slow... Norm beat me.

Norme and Ron:

Thanks for clarifying things for me. Exactly what I needed to know. I'll now feel a lot more confident in making Luger decisions. Thanks again.
