Grandad's Luger
 

My grandmother recently showed me grandad's luger. She unfortuantly remembers very little about how he got it though.

I have done some reasearch and belive it is a mauser military issue s/42 g-date 1935. There are a couple emblems i dont recognize though.

It appears all the numbers match including the two clips.

There are some newer bullets as well as a few older ones that have markings i don't know either, thought it was interresting.

Any information i could find out would be great!

My grandmother has indicated she would want to sell it, if anyone has a good idea on the value of safe places to sell.

I have hosted pictures on picasa because of the file sizes and quantity. Hope this is not hard for anyone to see.

That is a nice G date and should bring a nice price,I would guess at least $2500 mabe more for the complete rig. This would be as good a place as any to sell it. Wish I had the extra cabbage right now. Good luck. c

A nice G date, which yours is, should bring over $3000 with two original matched magazines.

It looks like a great G date you have there. The Forum here is full of a huge amount of knowledge and experience so it would be a good place to sell it also. I am definitely interested. Sending PM.

Hi Chris, nice looking G-Date. However, unless my eyes are really gone, only one magazine matches your pistol. The other is for a 1936 S/42 Luger S/N 2887 L. :(

What is the difference between e and l marks. how rare would it be to find another s/42 with the same stamping?!

Every 10,000 guns repeated the same serial number, albeit with a different letter after the first 10k, which had none.
With a bit of luck, over time,gramps just happened to come across the same serial number, but with a different letter code, so he included this magazine with the rig, (which is what I would have done), but it is not the magazine that was issued with the rig, which is a shame.
Still, a G date with one correct magazine is a prize and worth a collector's interest.

For an appraisal, this list is as honest as it gets. If you want a second opinion, check out Simpson's Luger site and look for a similar gun. Since they try to get full current retail, plus, subtract about 30% rom their asking prices to get a realistic current retail for your gun.

very interresting. i wish i knew more of how he came about it, he was not infantry so i am sure bought it from some buddy of his. my grandmother said it just showed up one day, he had shipped it.

was not trying to knock your gents opinions, just i know that pictures over the internet dont show all that much detail
