Value Question

I have S/42 marked 1936, with number in 2xxx and last two digits of number are matching on all parts it appears. Magazine has alumninum base (with gouge) but numbers on it match. Blueing is beautiful on top and toggle area, slightly pitted elsewhere.

Any ballpark idea of its value, and any tips as to what to look for to confirm originality?

Re: Value Question

Tom,

To confirm it's originality, go to the Technical Section of the Forum and all the stamps are located there. Use this information to confirm the Luger as being all original. Be sure to look at the hold open and the firing pin for them being matching too.

If we assume at this point it is all matching, a 1936 Luger in excellent condition (95-98%), would sell for approx. $1100-1200. In Very Good condition (90-94%) it would sell for approx. $800-900). With the slight pitting you describe, this would certainly lower the value. Without seeing the pistol and determining the exact amount of pitting, it is hard to give an estimate, but I would guess approx. $700. Now, these estimates are guesses only based on what a dealer may ask for one, and others may have better info, but I think they are close. If I am off on these, I hope others will jump in and let you know.
