Mauser change in finish in 1937

Dear Experts:

According to the Aaron Davis book, Mauser stopped rust bluing Lugers when they took over the DWM production in the early 1930's, and then finally did away with strawing small parts in 1937. Other sources seem to say that Mauser used rust bluing on Lugers all the way to 1937, and then switched to salt blue at the same time as it eliminated strawing. Which is right?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

I believe the latter is correct. They began salt bluing in early '37 at the same time they stopped strawing small parts. I've never seen a copy of Davis' book, but have heard it's very inaccurate, with what seems to be speculation in many cases.

Aaron Davis' books are fraught with errors, I don't own them and wouldn't bother. Just my $0.02

Mister Davis seems to make a common error. He sees what he thinks are "many" Lugers of a certain type and generalizes that small sample to the whole lot. Thousands of that type could have been made. One must always take the terms: "common", "rare", "few", etc. with a huge grain of salt!
