Erfurt mag disassembly
 

Want to swap my numbered Erfurt wood bottom into a much nicer correct magazine body. Have looked for diagrams on which direction the pin should be driven out without any luck, can somebody please help me out.

Will, I could be wrong but I don't think there is any proper direction. The pin is not tapered so either way would get it out. Just be sure the pin is not under the metal when you drive it out so it does not catch the side of the mag body. I have used a small diameter pin punch and they just slide right out. It may be a little more difficult when exchanging as the holes may or may not line up on the new mag bottom. Be sure you have proper support on the side of the mag body if you put any pressure on the pin such as taps with a hammer. You do not want to distort the mag body. Jerry Burney

When re-assembling the magazine it is best to find a second pin and push it psrtially into the two parts.

Then turn the assembly over then press or drive the finish pin folly into the magazine.

This allows one to be shure that the pin is in alignment at both ends before fully driving it in.

"An old steel workers trick called, "Drifting it into allignment". The temporary pin is called a bullet or drift pin"

This came up in an earlier discussion and I think that it was Hugh who said that the hole should be drilled half way through one side and then the other half drilled from the other side. Its supposed to be difficult to drill all the way through perfectly to the metal hole on the other side. I have not tried it yet but the time is coming.

Norm, You only want to drill the hole in the wood base if no hole is already present, as with GT's new wood bottoms. If their is already an existing hole, by elongating it, you will have a very hard time getting the retaining pin to go in straight. Sometimes a touch with a small round file may be necessary to remove a bit of wood blocking the hole in the tube, but I would not drill it out. Tom h
