Cannot ID a part

On my 1916 Erfurt, there is a spring steel piece that rides on the exterior top of the trigger plate. It is pinned to the frame, I have not been able to find it identified on a parts diagram. I have, however, found it on some photos.

What is the story with this part? Sorry - no pics but one like it can be seen at: http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthre...urt#post174689

Its a safety that prevents the sear from firing the pistol with the sideplate removed. The safety was installed only on Lugers used by the police; military weapons were exempt.

Thanks Charlie. So if that part is present, could it have been a retrofit or does that mean it was destined for police service from it's first build?

Bill,

The sear safety was probably installed on the gun in 1934 in response to orders issued in August 1933. Does the pistol have any markings on the front grip strap?

Yes - 2. A Crown over an "RC" over a Crown over a stylized "T" or "L" (I think).

Probaby an L.
But was it on the front grip strap?

Yep - front grip strap. It has a twin on the right side of the receiver, adjacent to the chamber.

I think there is a confusion of semantics. Erfurts had factory stamps on the front triggerguard, not the front grip strap
