Mauser Banner 1940
 

I'm trying to get a price fix for a lady that was left a this particular Luger by her late husband. She needs money and the pistol needs to go. It is a Mauser "Banner" 1940, no import marks, has police contract waffenampt on right side. I has a small arsenal made device attached to the sideplate that attaches to the frame. Looks like a postwar device to keep the sideplate from being lost. I have never seen it before, but suspect it to be an East German arsenal fixture. The pistol is all matching except for the magazine. The mag is nickle with aluminum bottom and numbered which probably shouldn't be for the indicated date of the contract gun. Just looking at it, I'd say about 80% but suspect some sort of rearsenal with the sideplate attachment and none of the parts that should be strawed are strawed but blued. Grips are nice with no damage and some speckling starting on the right side of the frame above the waffenampt. That's about all I can remember here at work without having it in my hand.


Any help would be appreciated.


p.s. she also has a model 1911 Colt with the s/n placing it as a 1918 pistol that has been converted by Augusta Arsenal sometime in it's life to an A1. Still has some of the 1911 features vs. the A1 features. Slide says Model of 1911 and it is U.S. Property marked. I compared to my Colt A1 that is a 1945 s/n and there are some definited differences. If anybody knows about it, email me with your advice.

Sounds like a police Luger with a SEAR SAFETY, that is the device attached to the frame and sideplate to prevent accidental firing during field stripping/cleeaning, parts SHOULD be salt blued NOT STRAWED on this particular variation. Others will be able to help you with pricing!

is thair a holster with it? extra magazine? loading tool?

these will all afect the price.

Thor..,do you know who would have put the piece on to prevent accidental firing? Is that a wartime expedient or post war?

It was put on there when made. It is proper for this pistol.

I just read an earlier post from 12/22 about Police pistols and all my questions were answered, except value. I estimate it about $1200-1500 since it is an "x" block 1940.

It has the steel colored brad for the sear safety, it has honest holster wear and the "geishert" is in dirty white.

I'm going to tell her that price range and she can come down if necessary. Around here, it you ask $1200..you can expect to pay around $1000. Odd market!

Better get it checked out by a pro. It is worth more than 1200$ if in 80% condition.

Auction Arms, an on-line auction, recently posted a 1941 E/L, 92-94% with matching mag for a starting bid of $1200. There were no takers! I am not near a reference that will compare production #'s, but sounds like the "market" is not too interested in Banners that are 94% with matching mag, let alone a 80% with mis-matched mag...

Hi,

Banners can be found in almost new original condition. The 1940 E/L is a fairly commonly found date. The 1940 E/C is in my opinion about the hardest variation to find. A matching magazine adds to the value. In 80 + or - condition it is not a high dollar piece.

So many Mauser Banners survived in almost new conditin that there is little interest in lesser condition pistols. The lesser condition are too high for shooters, but not good enough for collector quality.

Thanks for the info, guys..I told them that they'd have to try and sell themselves as the market is real narrow when you are talking above $1000. It really thins out who is interested.

I would suggest contacting Simpson LTD. They charge 15% for consignment sale. They reach a fairly large audience in the Luger market.

I wasn't aware of what Simpson charged for selling, but 15% is a bargain these days. Most of the auction houses charge going and coming. They tap the buyer as well as the seller.
