Reliability modifications?
 

Still new to Lugers and I am wondering if there is a list of reliability modifications that can be applied to Lugers - this, of course, would be for shooters.

I am reminded of the standard reliability mods to the 1911 platforms: throating, ramp work, ejector mods, ejection port mods, etc...

Contrary to the 1911 ( :D ) the Luger needs little improvement when it comes to reliability, provided the gun is in good technical order with crisp springs, a good magazine and ammunition that sticks closer to old world standards than to current SAAMI standards.

Sight mods are advisable, as the standard sights are a bit of a challenge. The Swiss 06/29 has a good sight combo, as do the post war Mausers.

I'm on my second "shooter" and I agree with Vlim. As long as the pistol is functionally complete and correct, the only real reliability issues seem to center around ammo and mags. I have found Federal FMJ (the cheaper WalMart stuff) and WWB work well.

What if you want throating for hollow points?
 

What if you want to get throating done to make it function with Hollow Points?

Also, Herbert Werle of Germany is excellent but you'd have to find a good importer/exporter who knows the laws.

I believe he has a website you guys should check out. I'll find it and get back to you. You should see what he can do with Lugers!!:thumbup:

Hi:

No modification is necessary, if you use a bullet design compatable with the loading ramp, but more importantly, the feeding nature of the magazine.

Over all cartridge length is a real key to proper Luger function, with Hollow Points or otherwise. With hollow points I'd start my work with the old DWM length, that being 29mm.

To really have a perfectly functional Luger, you must reload just for it.

With properly constructed reloads, and as Vlim has reminded us, crisp springs, a Luger can be a highly reliable pistol. Without these two elements, a Luger can be a continual nightmare.

The parts of this gun are very tightly coupled. Not easy to modify to upgrade, but very easy to modify to downgrade (from sportsman's view, of course. From collector's view, any non factory/government permanent change equals downgrade). But there is one thing that can be improved for sure: the sight. The sight is too small, and the reverse triangle notch does not make life easy. The front sight could fall off during shooting!! Another area that can be improved is safety. Its safety works on sear, not on firing pin.

Not reliability related though.
