Friend purchased his first Luger!
 

Hi all! A friend of mine just purchased his first Luger. It is a code 42 marked 1939. It appears to be all matching except the magazine (which the previous owner scratched his name on it). I didn't want to remove the grips to see if they were matching (not wanting to risk damaging them) but when I was taking pictures I could see that the former owner had removed them and also engraved his name on the interior side of the wood grips. I'm just looking for your thoughts and valuation of this Luger (and the dagger he purchased with it). Now let's see if I can figger out how to attach the pictures! Thanks!

I forgot to take a picture of the scabbard. The former owner's initials on the pommel of the knife BTW. :mad:

perhaps a person could get a bit more than David said, but IMHO he's right on in value.

Well, I hope that my friend's knife has some value! He purchased the Luger and knife together. That's kind of what I figured though.

What do the words on the blade say? Just curious.

The SS dagger could be worth over $1,000, depending on the scabbard. I hope the previous owner of these items realizes that his name engraving mania hurt the value of his items.

Thanks for the information! I know zero about these knives. The former owner's initials are on a metal fitting attached to a leather strap (I guess only having them on the pommel wasn't enough). The scabbard itself looked good at first glance but there was kind of a crimp partway down that made it a tight fit for the knife. Portions of the blade look like it had been cleaned with an abrasive. Of course, this combo came with the typical and fanciful story about the former owner's brother getting them off the the SS officer that he had slain in combat, that the first 2500 of production run of a luger went to the SS (and forget about the letter suffix), etc. I had previously seen and inspected this Luger at the gun shop, contacted Ed Tinker (great guy!)and confirmed that the asking price for the luger alone wasn't even in the same area code of the ball park, and then a couple of months later my friend texts me about his new purchase! Fortunately he had managed to negotiated the price (way down) to $2000 for the package deal and so he may have done alright for himself.
