Marking on 1916 DWM LP08
Gentlemen,
This marking is found on my recently acquired LP08. It looks like crowned and intertwined C (G?) and P, I also found the location a bit weird. Anybody? Balder http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...P1100003-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...8/P1100001.jpg |

Hi John, I have the same mark on a small loop, brass tipped, cleaning rod. I have no idea what it means, but have always suspected that it was Scandinavian in origin. Regards, Norm

It is a British (London) definitive proof in use after 1935. I have no idea when its use ended (if indeed it ever did). It is odd that a rash of these obscure British "proofs" are showing up.

Thanks Ron, that makes sense since it has British proofs under the barrel as well. I believe this is from the first half of the 1950's.

I'd swear that the Brits. had an Army of Proof Stampers. My Webley is almost covered in markings. Maybe this was their job equivilant of "counting paper clips".

Perhaps some of our British experts can jump in, but my understanding is that the proofing of British guns is officially (or was) the task of a guild like organisation.
I remember reading some stories on the British proofing procedures. Interarms, with it's main warehouse in Manchester, was obliged to use the services of this guild/organization for reproofing military firearms that were commercially sold abroad. |
Ah, union rules...
