Double date Luger

Hi everybody!

Just picked up my first Luger today.

It's a double-date DWM (1918-1920) in 9mm.All matching numbers except the magazine,about 80% finish,strawing about gone.Should make a good shooter.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what unit it was originally issued to.The markings on the grip are-

12./J.R.2.66.They have been Xed out,but are still legible.

Thanks,

John

Those are Weimar Army unit numbers on your double date. If you weapon is all matched, except the mag, why do you really consider it to be a shooter?

There is considerable history involved here. It was orginally issued to the Imperial Army in 1918, then reissued to the Weimar Army after 1920 and when the nazis moved into power they eliminated any unit markings, so it was again reissued to the "New" German Army after 1933. This Luger traveled a lot during it's military "career" until it was captured by, in all probablity an American GI and was brought to the US. If this gun could only talk, what stories it would tell.

Re: Not really a double date

John, There amy be some confusion as to what this 1920 mark really means. I believe it was a property mark and not a date stamp. Anyone else have an opinion? Jerry Burney

Re: Not really a double date

Jerry,

Probably a little bit of both as the property stamp was instituted in 1920, but other than that it had nothing to do with the date and all to do with being Reichswehr property. There are instances of Lugers with no original date being 1920 property marked, and this is certainly no date stamp.
