Proper pics of my BYF42, take a look

Hello gents!

Well I've finally got my hands on a functioning digital camera, believe it or not. Some of you will remember my earlier attempts in the new collector's forum with my cellphone.
The unmarked grips that came with the pistol are more clearly visible in these photos, as are the rest of the weapon overall. Any additional thoughts are greatly appreciated as to the originality of the grips, the FXO mag that came with it or whatever. All the serial numbers match.
I paid $1400 for this pistol in NY State last month. How'd I do?
Thanks for looking!
ETA
The spotting on the finish in pic # 5 forward of the side plate is from the silicone cloth I wiped the pistol down with, the finish isn't spotty.

Great looking Luger.

Fenian, I think you did okay, now get a nice magazine (without chips). :)

Hi Fenian, Your byf 42 looks like a nice gun - original and unmessed with. The black plastic based mag is correct for your gun. It's hard to tell about the grips. Late Mauser grip numbering was very erratic. I have seen them numbered, unnumbered, and SE/655 or SE/135 marked. A picture of the inside of the grips might help. Regards, Norm

My Banner has the same cursive letter suffix. I haven't found this letter form in the reference postings, but have gotten advice that it is a cursive "y" with a dot over it (the closed top of the "y").

mrerick, the suffix letter on Fenian's 42 byf is a "g"!!!!!!

It is NOT a "y" with a dot over it!!!!!!!

mrerick 02-13-2010 05:59 PM

Frank, Thanks for this feedback.

We thought it might be a "g" also, or possibly a "q".

All the photos of the cursive "g" letters had a looped tail.

Is there a reference that includes this version of the cursive letter?

Thanks, Marc

Marc,
Go to the Technical Information on the left of your screen. Go to markings, then to Ed Tinkers suffix photos, than to F-H. There is a similar "g" in his photos.

Yeah, I've been looking. Those things are expensive!

Bore Dimensions?

Just curious, but shouldn't there be bore dimensions on the underside of the barrel? Or did they stop stamping these dimensions in the later part of '41. I know on the few 'byf' '41s I've been able to examine, they all had these dimensions.
Just trying to fill in blanks.
Thanks, barr

See Frank's survey. Some have the bore dimensions and some don't. Mine does not have them.

barr, the bore gage marking was eliminated at about the midway point of the d suffix range.

BTW, thanks for all those that provided data for this point of information!!! :)

What do you think???????

Pic #1 looks like a different set of grips due to lighting, but it's the same grips.

Somebody tell me these are original!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Fenian, Your grips look like the real deal to me. Happy Valentine's Day! Regards, Norm

Bore Dimensions?

Thanks Frank and Instumpy,

That's good information about the bore dimensions. I must have missed your survey, probably didn't have a 'byf' then. The one I have is a '41 byf, s.n. 4435t and it has the bore dimensions. Can't remember the s.n. of the others I've looked at, since they weren't mine.
This is a great place for info, thanks again,
barr
