Serial number

I just purchased a Luger. It was manufactured by Mauser and has the S/42 marking. Most of the numbers on the parts say 42 and the serial number is 7742. Can anyone give me some more information about this pistol, how can I research it in more detail?

Start by giving us lots of pictures to look at, including numbers, markings, mags, tool, holster, etc. Then the local brain-trust can tell you a bit more.
