Can you tell what model luger this is by 1 picture?
 

Friend of mine is selling a luger and just has 1 photo available. It's a 1936 that his father brought back from WWII chambered in .30 Luger

Can you tell what make it is or any other info about it?

no and I don't know of any 1936 that was in 30 caliber....


I have heard stories of 30 cal being used by the railroad, so anything is possible.

However, from what you said, a 1936 would be a military acceptance marking, however, I don;t see any proof and acceptance markings on the right.



We need a lot more than a darker small picture.

Actually I'm sorry my friend said it as in 38 cal didn't have my glasses on. So that would make it a 9mm luger. Is that correct for a 1936?

9mm is correct for a 1936. Ask your friend to describe the markings on the gun. If there is an "S/42" on the toggle its a Mauser (the most likely).

Thanks Eric W. I know the S/42 would mean it's a Mauser. I saw a 1936 S/42 on gunsamerica for really expensive. (4200) which is in better condition than the one I have pictured. What markings, or serial numbers would be most desirable on this gun.

Also are most lugers that American soldiers brought home MATCHING? I would have thought they would be since they were taken from dead soldiers that probably had them issued brand new.

Thousands..many thousands of German Soldiers surrendered and dropped their weapons into piles. Not all weapons were directly captured.

If it says Krieghoff on the toggle that would be much more desirable. As Ed states, you need more and better photos.

A returning GI would rather say he took his Luger off a prisoner or dead soldier, than picked it out a pile like this.

not by me .... no, really I can't remember where I copied it from ....
About 4 or 5 years ago, I posted this on Jan Still's Luger forum, and it gathered some discussion, ... if I remember correctly, another member knew of the photo, its source and story. Maybe a search there could find it, I use the same name both forums (fora, forae ?)

Some of the replies were funny, and one person thought he recognized Ralph Shattuck in the photo, getting his start as a Luger collector.

I think I see one of my shooter Lugers in that million-dollar pile, the one near the back with the little scratch next to the toggle ...... I bet the original magazine is somewhere in there too.

I do not know if this photo was taken in Norway, but I remember such boxes in Ackerhus in Oslo.

this photo is in Johnson's "booty" book, and I am sure in others, I have this photo and about 5 or 10 others like it saved from the internet.

Many pistols were also simply purchased in the 1950s and 1960s to replace the 'war booty' that either never was, or was lost, sold or gambled away somehow. Companies like Interarms imported literally thousands of them in those days. The European countries were glad to get rid of them and there was a US market for these souvenir guns.

Guys what is the minimum value of a 1936 luger photoed? I am going to take a look at it this week and see if it's a Mauser or Kreighoff. Do I necessarily have to disassemble it to see if the parts are matching? On that particular pistol what should I be looking for, what markings etc.

Also can you tell if it's been refinished or all original?

The guy offering it hasn't commended on how much he wants for it.

I believe a 36 Krieghoff would have a fire blued magazine release button, but a 36 Mauser would have a straw colored button.
