Artillery rig repairs
 

I just bought a rig for a 1917 artillery which is in great shape except for the little leather cap which fits over and protects the iron on the shoulder board. That leather has been eaten away by some varmit or had been against something abrasive and about 30 - 35 % is gone (The top layer of leather). The thing looks awful in that area. The question is should I try to have it replaced or repaired by the wizard or leave it? It sure adds character to the rig. Which action is apt to leave me with the more valued item? Anybody have any experience in this exact situation?
