RWS 9mm Ammo and Lugers
 

Anyone have any experience with RWS 9mm Ammo in Lugers or other guns? Our local shop just got a shipment and it's $20 per 50. 124 grain bullet. Good price I thought.

No Walmarts around? At $20/50 I think about ending any 9mm shooting.

That's the cheapest 9mm we have. Any opinions? And no, walmart/kmart don't sell ammo out here.

The Sportsman's guide just got in a whole shipment of Pakistany 9mm. Very reasonably priced. It works fine in my shooter Lugers and my MP40

RWS = GeCo = Dynamit (Nobel) AG.

Should work just fine in a P08, a tad on the mild side.

Try J&G Sales in Prescott AZ. They are advertising Remington 115gr. at $14.95 a box of 50, or Brown Bear 115gr at $104 for 500 rds.. They do mail order and are easy to deal with.

I bought from J&G, and their prices are good. However, you have to be there to sign for the ammo when it arrives. They require that the shipper gets a signature upon delivery. I have always been satisfied with my purchases from them.

alanint commented on the surplus Pakistani 9mm from Sportsman's guide and his experience with it. I bought 500 rounds because of the price. I had one FTE in the first 50 rounds fired through my 42 byf. Today at the range, I had 7 FTF out of 100. Repeated strikes did not fire them. I guess you get what you pay for. Once my supply is depleted, no more Pakistani surplus 9mm for me. Surplusammo.com, a supplier near me in Western WA carries BVAC reloaded 9mm ammo at a good price. I have had excellent results using it in both my P-08 and my Springfield XD-9 Tactical.

I just used Winchester 115gr in my 1913 DWM (1st time since buying). No issues at all.
Had read somewhere that the Luger was designed for a higher load. :confused:

Would 124gr be appropriate for shooting then? I have some by "RWS".....

Also, the Remington 115gr round appears slightly shorter than the Winchester; no problems with using this as well right?

I just got some of the RWS 124 grain at my local Walmart for $12.97 a box. I will try some next week and see how my Luger likes it. Up til now I have only used Win. 115 FMJ in mine, and it has functioned flawlessly, with good mags.

Appropriate? Yes. But it is always advisable to test a small batch before buying the lot :)

I've fired S&B 145gr subsonic, which is scaringly short, snubnosed ammo with a reduced load. To my amazement the P08 worked through them without problems. Only the toggle wouldn't remain open after the last shot.

Eye and ear protection is always a good precaution, especially around older guns.

When I go involved with Lugers someone(I think on this forum) told me to not use anything lighter than 124 grn bullets.

I've used that advice and never had a problem with a failure to operate the action.

I'm glad to hear others have had success with lighter bullets but I have never tried them

If you are a reloader like me DAG, RWS, GeCo brands may pose an issue. DAG brass has a smaller flash hole than most brass and standard decapping pins and will not cycle through. Pretty good quality brass though so I drilled out a few hunderd of them a 5/64" bit will get the flash hole to the right size. Reload away ! 124gn Montana gold fmj,CCI500 primer and 4.1gns Vitahvouri n320 C.o.l 1.142" It is a beautiful thing. Powder is a bit pricey but it is so clean you can burn hundreds of rounds with almost no fouling.

I have had good performance in my Lugers using 4.0 grains of TiteGroup behind a 115gn Remmington FMJ.

I did find that the slightly hotter recommended load of 4.2gn of TiteGroup caused stovepipe problems in a 1917 Erfurt.

Just got back from shooting a box of 124 gr. RWS through a Luger.
As Vlim stated: "Should work just fine in a P08, a tad on the mild side". It cycled and fired 100% through the pistol and 4 different brands of mags. However, the recoil was pretty heavy and sharp, so I would disagree on the "mild" part. It was pretty accurate, though.

These are one of the most accurate ammo I've ever shot. But you are not talking about these.

RWS or Geco always work fine, but muy favourite no is Fiocchi 100grs. Superb accuracy and low recoil, but I think it is not exported to USA.

That ammo is beyond shooting: it has become collectable and shooting it is destroying collector grade ammunition, really.

A mint box of this RWS/Geco pre-1945 stuff brings at least double the amount of a modern commercial 50-round ammo box. So if you have a stash, start selling it to collectors and stop shooting it :)

I know, Vlim, but imagine to find almost a full box of full boxes.... Don't you want to fire some?. I tested them and find them very acccurate, so I decided to fire 70 rds. on a precision competion. 542 pts over 600 trough my Jericho 941.

Curious to fire this ammo with this pistol ;-)

But I did not sell any round, I gifted some boxes to my friends, collectors or not, and kept left few for my collection or new friends.

I got several years ago some .22 LR 1943 german boxes and also with great acccuracy.
