Hello, I stumbles upon this forum and have been reading alot. I have a Luger that I will be buying from a family member. I would like some help Identifying what it is a and a fair price for both parties.

You are missing the one photo, which would provide the most information about the gun. This would be a shot of the entire upper part of the gun, then individual shots of the top of the toggle and the top of the chamber.
Is there a letter suffix after the serial number on the front of the frame?
Do all numbers match? you must take the gun down in order to determine if the trigger, bolt, hold open and firing pin also match the rest of the pistol.
Does the magazine have a matching number?

All these factors will influence value.

Thanks for the help. Maybe these pics will help. The front serial # has a squigely lin under it. The mag # does not match.

Pictures are great, but for new posters to the forum; please include serial number in the text, top of receiver marking, any markings on the gripstrap, and proofs and acceptance.


Value depends on your location; what country are you from? There is no location, such as state in your profile?

The serial # is 1319. with the 19 showing in all parts. Top receiver shows 42. No markings do I see in the gripstrap. Thanks again, Robert

The squiggly line under the serial number is a letter. Try to determine what that letter is. Get others who have experience with this type of font to help.

The back sight groove appears to have been widened and squared off.

Maybe you can see and translate the squigley, a cursive r or n maybee. Nice catch on the rear site modification, I had not even noticed. You guys are alot of good info here! Robert

It is an "N".

The gun is known loosely in collecting circles as a "Black Widow", although that term is purely some dealer's invention and has no basis in history. Is was manufactured by Mauser.
Although it was made in 1940, guys with production tables will give you an approximate month of manufacture and others will provide a rough value in today's market

Hi, Although a 1940 42 is a very common variation, the Black Widow grips are seldom found on 1940s. On the down side, the finish is thinning, particularly on the grip straps, and it's too bad that someone took a file to that rear sight (keen eyes Alan).
I think that $1,500.00 would be on the high side for this gun, and $1,00.00 too low. If you and your relative settle on $1,250.00, I think it would be fair to both of you. Regards, Norm

For what it is worth I have a 1940/42 serial number 2046n. Only a couple hundred from yours. Probably made the same day. You might want to report your serial number to the other forum (Jan Still's), as there is a study being conducted for plastic grips on various models.

Thanks for all the help. You guys are a wealth of knowledge on this. I'll have to admit that through my researching this, it has sparked an interest in these pistols. i never new there were so many variations...I will be keeping an eye out for others.
