Hi. I just bought a Luger P08. I have been wanting to own one for years. I just went with what I could afford (it cost $691 plus shipping). I think it was relatively cheap because not all the numbers match.

It has an anchor on the back of the grip. Above this is an "M" and below it is "N.99." What do these markings mean? I assume the anchor means it's Navy issue.

There is a "G" stamped on top of the receiver. "S/42" is also stamped on top. I did a little research and I believe G means it was produced in 1935 and S/42 means it was manufactured by Mauser. Is that correct?

I figure this will be my "shooter" to play with and not have to worry about damaging it and losing it's value.

Any comments or advice for a first-time Luger owner would be appreciated.

OHOH. Now you've done it. The first step towards lugermania. There is no cure! You'll need a regular fix! The N on the back grip tells us that it was marked to the Nordsee Naval station at Wilhelmshaven. An O would be to the same at Kiel. So you have a part at least of a Kriegsmarine pistol. A G date is 1935, and it is estimated that there were only 700 procured.

Read everything you can. There is a lot of great info on this Forum. Start with the New collectors chapters.

Congrats on that Luger. I was eying it myself. I figure if you can't afford a whole Navy luger,half of one can be just as fun.

I already have the arms & armour bug which includes military rifles, handguns, bayonets in fact anything military surplus. Not surprisingly I work in an Army Surplus store!:cool: I blame my Uncle who ran a militaria Auction house back in England and my father who dealt in Arms & Armour.

I'm looking forward to receiving my new Luger. Which books / manuals would you recommend? I want to build up a decent reference library on the subject. The first thing I'd like is a good reference on care and maintenance. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
