Arty compensator attached
 

If an arty has a compensator attached, should it readily come off? Is having one good or bad? are they in demand?

What type of compensator are you looking at? Muzzle? whether it comes off or not depends on who modified the gun. I personally have never heard of an original factory compensator for the Artillery Luger.

A compenstaor would be "bad" on an original and correct Artillery Luger. It would be a post war, American addition which would kill any collectable value.

Can you post some photos?

A compensator on a Luger is like go faster stripes on a golfkart. Looks nice but totally useless.

This setup appears to me similar to compensators, which are held by a set screw or by the front sight itself. If you have access to the gun look for a set crew or some indication that if you tapped out the front sight this moderator would just slide off.
With any luck this is the case and no serious permanent damage, (except for a set screw gouge) was done to the gun...

The front sight is not an Artillery sight. The frame appears to have a Mauser hump, and the stock lug has been removed. The sear bar is unrelieved, suggesting that the upper came from an early Imperial Luger.
