A noted Luger reference book writer once told me that the 1936 S/42 was the best finished rust blued Luger produced by Mauser, or at least that is what my feeble brain seems to remember. Your '36 looks like a nice one!!:jumper:

FNorm 12-09-2009 09:34 PM

Thank you all! it is the best I have, and have seen in terms of finish and lack of wear.

Fred,
I see that the first two digits of the S#, '71' are stamped on the inside of the sideplate. I thought Mauser stamped the first two digits +one. In this case it would be '72'. Is there a transition (serial # range) from one way to the other?

PS. I don't have Still's Third Reich Lugers. I'm waiting for the rewrite, and also Joop's upcoming Mauser Luger book.

MFC,

That changed over time. Maybe some of the 'Old guys" can help me here. I've read it, but can't find it now. They went from no marks inside, to first two digits, to first two + one.

MFC & FNorm, Look in FAQ in the section New Collectors Forum.
