1941Police Luger (?)
 

Hi all, been watching the forum for awhile, finally posting. I have my Dad's Luger he got in WWII. I will post pics. first a little history... One of my Dad's buddies wrote a book of their journey through the war called "The Pride of Willing And Able" by Bill J. Krehbiel. My Dad got the Luger in new condition with holster. (see bottom of the page in pic) I believe its a Police issue. I am NOT selling this piece of my Dad's history .Just thought I would get some expert advise/opinions. I did shoot this 20 or so years ago, great gun. One matching magazine, one does not match number on gun. Holster only has wear from being stored and moved around for 65 years! no crease in the holder for the taken down tool(missing) its a new holster.
I can remember when I was 10 or so my Dad and older brother engraving Dad's drivers license number into all his guns, If I only knew what they were doing!!!!! a shame.

Whodoc, welcome&congratulation, it's a very nice Police Luger, (has a sear safety) and a police holster. Too bad it has the DL# engraved, it lowers the value of the gun. But this can be fixed by an expert. Ask THOR for advise.

It is a Banner Luger, not just a police luger. This was a commericial gun that went into police service. With the date of 1941 it went into army and issued to the police.


It is worth about $1500 to $3000, depending on who wanted it; as a banner is rare and a police even more so...


Be advised that "fixing" a problem like this is not acceptable to most true collectors. Yes its done, but whats the difference of "fixing" something like this and rebluing the entire gun?

I am not going to "fix" this gun, just try to keep it in good condition and not shoot it! This site is just great with a lot of knowledgeable people!

What color is the top of the steel rivet that holds the sear safety in place. Blued or in the white? Pictures and lighting do funny things so I thought I would ask.
TRL indicates Serial Range 5800-10000 and then 1-740 for 1941 Police Banner EL EN with sear safety

Thor, The rivit should be blued on these hot dipped post 1936 Police PO8s. Some of the earlier reworked ones will not be blued or it has worn off. I agree keeping it "as is" is probably the best course. TH

All Mauser sear safety Lugers (G date, 1936 S/42, 1939 S/42, 41 byf; Police Banners dated 1938, 1939, 1940 1941 and 1942 Note: if present on 1942) have the sear safety installed by police armories. All the connecting rivets that I have observed on these Lugers (in original condition) are in the white.

This luger is original, never been to a gunsmith or altered in any way(except for the drivers license # engraved!)
Dad got these new out of the case in Austria, had brought home two, gave one to his brother and kept this one.

Back in the early 80s as a police officer in South Florida, It was policy that every firearm we impounded for whatever reason, the case number had to be engraved on the frame or slide. You cannot imagine how painful this was for me, we ruined many good firearms, luckily the Dept. was sued a few times and the practice stopped.
