1911 DWM Proofs
4 Attachment(s)
Greetings,
I just unpacked a box that I have been anxiously waiting for. It is a 1911 DWM, serial number 399f. If Mr. Still is interested, this serial is above his stated range for 1911. Hopefully this might be a significant bit of information. Another subject is the proofing. Can anyone shed any light on what kind of proof marks are on this Luger. I have gone to Costanzos' book, Mr. Stills' books and Mr.Kenyons' book and cannot find this proof mark. The closest I can come is a 1934 DWM/Mauser rework. I would think if this would be the case, there would additional marking. Any input will be appreciated. Mike |
Beautiful piece!

Mike, Have you considered proof #13 on page 285 of Costanzo? It could be that the forward inspector's marking is a C/V with a few added dings. TH

I will follow this with interest, as I have 199f - only 200 numbers from yours. The second proof mark is different in comparison (Crown E)
Does it have an inscription on the back strap? Piet |

In comparison with 199f see attached

What a great find Mike! Could the second mark be the same as the one illustrated by Piet on his 199f specimen, but only poorly struck by the manufacturer? (and maybe a couple of handling dings during its 98 year lifetime?)

Greetings,
In less than one week, I have had the good fortune of acquiring two 1911 DWM Lugers. Both have shed some new light on the extend of the "f" block serial numbers. However, I must confess that I had to return the first one, serial number 399f. Mike |
Mike,
What issues did 399F have, if you can discuss this? |
No problem in discussion. There was extensive pitting on several area of the Luger. In addition, it had been touched up with cold blue. What was amazing is the seller represented it as a 99% gun.

Mike B,
These are the markings on my 1911 DWM, serial # 3297 e - they look kind of the same. As on yours, the middle one looks like a mark that has been overstamped by the left one. Mine has a regimental marking on the front grip strap and no hold-open. Balder http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...s/P1090222.jpg |
The marks on 525f are the same as 199f. Is there a regimental marking on the back strap?
