Hi to all,
As stated above, I am a new member and have questions about my "Simson & Suhl Co." Luger my father brought back from Germany in 1945. Serial #8603 is stamped all over including the inside of the wooden grips. I've researched all I could find, but am unable to determine age. Any help you expertd can give will be appreciated. Thanks, Clark |
Welcome....stand by your going to get lots of commets, this is a dandy.....I'll let the experts ring in......thans for sharing

Clark, Our in residence Simson expert, who wrote the book on Simson Lugers.. Ed Tinker will be along shortly..I believe he is at a gun show today.
By the way..put some oil on the poor thing! Jerry Burney |
Although the magazine matches by number, its an eagle 63 and thus NOT a Simson magazine.
I can't quite see the proofs and acceptance on the right, is it Eagle 6 eagle 6 eagle 6 proof eagle or? Look on the bottom of the gun, as if you are placing the mag into the well, the stock lug should be marked eagle 6 eagle or E33 E33. 8603 would most likely have been made around 1929 or 1930... Ed PS: Any grip strap markings? PSS: I will move this to the new collector area... |
Hi,
Many thanks to you all Police Luger, Jerry & Ed for your quick responses. First, I had oil this Luger before I put it away. Got to do it again. I read a post on Care & Feeding for Lugers, will pull it up and follow those instructions. Second, to Ed...The proofs read Eagle 6 (with another Eagle on top), Eagle 33 & Eagle 6. The stock lug reads Eagle 6, I believe that would be at the very bottom of the grip strap (if I'm understanding what a "Grip Strap" is). Is this helpful? Thanks again for your help. One of these pics was a 'Random Album Picture' today, and as I've never seen pics of a Simson before (they don't get discussed much) I'm curious about the 'flaking' of the bluing...It's best seen on the safety lever but also on the toggle...
Is this 'flaking' typical of Simson's??? Why would this happen??? |
I would venture an educated guess, that the type of rust that occurs is not manufacturer dependent, but dependent on the conditions that caused the rust to form. All military Lugers, regardless of the manufacturer, would have to be made to strict metallurgy and finish specifications... so how they would rust would have to depend on how they lived their "lives"... Just my $0.02
