how do i get the left grip off in one piece?

. . the grips on my '38 mauser are completely black. i would like to clean them, but not at the expense of losing the chip under the safety.

. . i have seen a procedure for the cleaning itself. but how do i go about removing the grip without breaking off the chip?

. . i would rather continue to have black unbroken grips than clean chipped ones.

thanks,

bill

I always take the right grip off first then carefully remove the left by carefully pushing up underneath while still having light pressure on the left grip with my left hand to maintain control of movement. Once I have some movement carefully work the grip out past the safety.

Reverse the steps to reassemble.

The operative words here are "carefully" with each step.

There is some more advice in this thread.
