I.D /Value Geisicher 1923
Found a Luger today and need some help in identifying it.(Would be my 1st) The word GEISICHER is on it and the numbers 56/23 plus the letter L (in cursive) plus another 23 stamp. Barrel is a little over 3 inches long...maybe 3 1/2 inches. Couldn't find any other I.D. Brown wood grips. Appears to be in good condition. Dealer wants $1000.00 Deal/no deal?

micah, welcome to the forum.
Too little information to help. Geischert just means safety, and is on most lugers. Caliber? Any Year stamps? The serial number doesn't make sense, it could be 1 number, 2, 3 or most common a 4 digit, but not with a slash. If most small parts are numbered with the last two of the serial number, then its probably a military and not a commercial. $1000 is not a rediculous price, but if its a 7.65mm (30 luger) then its at the high end. I would study a lot more before jumping in; there are lots of lugers out there. Ed |
Micah..Take a tad bit of money and buy a good Luger book. ANY Luger book. If you are planning to spend a grand on a Luger... you need to become familiar with what to look for.
Ed Tinker..the fellow just above.. has written a very good book on "Simson Lugers", It would be as good as any to give you some exposure to these fascinating firearms. Buy a book from Ed..it will pay off tremendously, will be great reading , become part of your gun library and will be more valuble when Ed runs out of them. http://www.simsonlugers.com Good Luck! Michael, From the photo's you sent I see you did not take my sage advice...It is indeed a Commercial model. LIKELY .30 lUGER Cal. At least you didn'y pay more than it's worth. Might make a decent shooter. For a first Luger you could have done worse.
Now you need to take it apart and thouroughly inspect it. clean it, shoot it and love it. Congratulations! Jerry Burney |
Jerry, thanks for the info and concern. I have not purchased the Luger as yet;however the seller has offered to sell it to me based on the info I gathered from this board identifying the Luger as a commercial variety. The price is $569.00 Is this a good deal now? Thanks again for your help and concern. It is a 30.cal.

Michael..I am pleased that you are pursuing a Luger. The price is decent enough for what it is ...(.30) and the condition. If it were me... I would ask the seller for a 3 day return priveledge to make sure the pistol functions at the range. If it does NOT function properly... it is an expensive doorstop/paperweight/boat anchor. It's condition makes it a shooter and nothing more. Make sure it shoots.
Invest the money you saved in a Luger book or two... Good Luck! Jerry Burney |
