Info on my Luger

5 Attachment(s)
Hello,
My grandfather gave me this 1916 Luger. I believe it to be a German military model. He has owned it for about fifty years after buying it from his brother for $10. I am interested to know anything I can about it. I can tell you that it is still in excellent working order, we use it occasionally at the pistol range and it is as accurate as any modern 9mm pistol I've used. All parts are original and stamped "47" except the magazine which is stamped "3073 c".

Thank you.

It appears to be an army model, made in 1916 by the company DWM.

Go to the FAQ and you can see some information on DWM, and then do searches and find info on 1916 DWM

Welcome to the forum,

I will try to put up additional pictures tomorrow, as I just realized there are more marks under the barrel. I am interested in learning as much as I can about this Luger and its history, and definitely more about how I can preserve it or maintain it. I do not plan on ever selling this pistol, but I am curious to know its approximate value.

Thank you.

Hello again,

I've attached some additional pictures of the pistol. I am currently trying to determine my serial number, as the only numbers I can find on the gun are "47" and "8,82". I assumed that the serial number would be longer than 2 digits, but perhaps I am wrong. Any info would be helpful. Thank you!

It does appear to be a 2 digit Sn and the 8,82 is a bore gage.....nice gun

Thanks. Is there any info that can be gained by knowing the serial number (perhaps where or when in 1916 it was made)?

Lookin at an enlarged image, it appears that there is a small letter under the serial number on the front of the frame (perhaps an "a"?) that is part of the serial number. If it is an "a" that would make the gun the 10,047th DWM army Luger produced in 1916. Pretty nice looking piece.

Thanks very much. Here's a larger image of that marking.

Thanks for the additional image, but it doesn't clear things up much. It looks like it may be an "f" on the barrel but the letter under the frame serial looks somewhat different. Can you provide a straight on shot of the frame marking?

These are the best pictures I could come up with. The letters are identical, and after looking at the references you have on this website I also believe it is an "f". Would that make this the 60,047th Luger DWM produced in 1916?

One thing we can all agree on: I need a new camera!

Ron Wood 09-28-2009 01:38 AM

Dan,
You are correct, it is "f". So 60,047 is also correct.
