1939 police value
 

I would like to say thank you in advance. i recently aquired this from the vet son. You guys here don't seem to mind to state a value of an item if you have good pics, That i will try here. I would like to pass that info to my family in case they have to move it or keep it because things do happen. I know lugers are based on year, type, and condition this looks close to 98%. also came with police holster and 2 non matching mags.

IT shows more deep blue with out the strong light on it. the pics, show more of a brown in it

In today's market I'd venture a $1200-$1400 guess-timate. I don't see anything that sets it apart from other Lugers of that vintage, but it looks very nice!

This is not your typical police. It was army that was routed to the police and falls in the serial range of others of this configuration. You can probably add 1K to the value that was listed above. That should get you in the ballpark of what it's value is.

It is probably more rare than a '39 Banner Police.

I want to thank you guys that posted. The reason I asked the value, I didn't want say at first. I had read a recent post here or at another sight about keeping a record of what a piece would bring if a family members needs to sell. This just happened recently after I had read it, a new outside salesman came to the shop a week ago Thursday, I met him and shook his hand one time and then he was killed in a car accident on Monday. I do alot of driving myself in and around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, this is why I asked.

There were only about 38,000 S/42 Mausers produced in 1939 and your pistol is one of 600 that were provided to the police. It is extemely rare and looks to be in exceptional condition. It is indeed worth $2500-3000, even in today's depressed market. Does the magazine have a matching number?

1939 with police holster and 2 non matching mags, it is rare, probably close to $3000, depends on the holster and magazines that came with it.

I want to thank all of you that have commented on this post. I will pass this info to my brother, he doesn't know a late war paratrooper helmet from an un-decaled late war Wehrmackt helmet. He's not a collector, what a shame, but it's good to find other collectors out there that share the same interst.

I've been reading here for some time, and I see how the Lugers become addictive. what I would like to next is an artillery model

metal inlays in police luger grips
 

Why do have police luger wooden grips have metal inlays?
Do all police lugers of the 30s period have thosoe metal inlays?
What are those inlays for?

Luger grips did not come with metal inlays and the German Reich didn't approve of individual soldiers/police adding decoration to the grips. The metal inlays that you have seen were done either by a bored GI adding some decoration to his captured war trophy or were added after the war to add some additional glamour to some tall tale about that trophy. Aftermarket grips were often decorated also. I remember seeing a photo of a metal Luftwaffe Eagle inletted into a Luger grip. I really liked that decoration but it wasn't an original thing.

I did not mean decorative inlays on the grips, I ment some metal inlays on the inside of the grips of police lugers. They are not visible from the outside.

It is a guy whoe sells plenty of luger items like holsters, mags and parts.

Not the best place to start. His item descriptions are not too accurate at times. Note his 'Dutch holster' which is actually a Portuguese police holster and worth less than half of his asking price.

Standard Luger grips NEVER have metal inlays. Some period resellers offered stocks that could be fitted to the pistol using modified grips with metal plates (the Ideal Holster Stock, for example).

I remember seeing that auction on ebay. The seller stated that the metal insert protected the grip when a magazine safety was present. It was fitted into the recess on the inside of the left grip, over the area of the mag safety. First time I saw or heard of one, and I wondered if it was legit.
