New Treasure
Please help me out guys. I bought a 1941 dated mountaineering tool. It is Swiss in origin, but I can't seem to find anyone who knows what it is called exactly. Mabe one of our German fellow collectors will know the term. It is about 3 feet long with a spike on the bottom. the shaft goes into a pick on one end and a hoe like metal blade on the other end. What is the proper name for this? If it helps, the seven dwarfs had them in Disney's SNOW WHITE.

It is commonly called...
an ICE AXE. What the seven dwarves had were called PICK AXES. One is used on the mountain for climbing, the other in the mountain for prospecting. HTH

Re: It is commonly called...
![]() Wasn't that a small ICE axe used by the murderer in "First Deadly Sin" the movie that Frank Sinatra killed the murderer at the end of the movie with one shot from a Luger? ~Thor~

Speaking of hammers...
the picture you posted was of a CLAW HAMMER not an ICE AXE. Remind me never to let you build a cabinet for me!!!
|
Re: Speaking of hammers...
Nope. it was identified as a ice axe in the movie, a claw hammer has a split in the middle, I remember this one had a point! And you right, I aint a cabinet maker! But you are a good wood worker! YANNO!

Re: Speaking of hammers...
Oh, it was called a ice pick in the movie. Like the movie industry is always right, And trust everything you read too? Don't worry, I'm here to help, I'm from the gov't!
Heh, heh, ya right, Ed |
Re: Speaking of hammers...
Didn't see the movie, but just going by the poster you showed, it has a split up the middle, hence my response.

SANTA CALLS IT...
Santas helpers who are legally referred to as Subordinate Clauses often refer to what you have as a HOE1 HOE! HOE!

Re: ALPENSTOCK!!! For driving pitons! (EOM)
|
Not Likely!
I would pay good money to see anyone drive a piton into rock with an Ice Axe (Alpen Stock)! They actually carried and used a sledge hammer type tool for that chor.
|
Re: Not Likely!
It looks like a rock hammer to me. By the way, the worst use of a Luger is in the James Bond movie "For Your eyes Only". One of the bad guys uses a Luger as a hammer to knock some pitons out of the rock as Bond is climing to a monestary in Greece. He deserved his fate!
