1917 DMW Artillery Luger
 

Help please,

I have a 1917 9mm DMW all matching parts artillery luger with the leather holster. I got this gun from my grandfather 35 years ago. Neither of my children are into guns; therefore, I'm thinking about selling this pistol to someone who who enjoy having it. My problem is I don't know what the pistol and holster are worth. Sometime in the past the gun was nickled- long before I got it.

If someone could tell me a range of value I would appreciate it and how does one go about selling a pistol like this? Is there a recommended web site/directory?

In nickeled condition, it is not of much interest to serious collector. A good place to list it is www.gunbroker.com , but you must transfer it between FFL holders. GB also has link to FFL network, you can find a FFL holder near you.

Gunbroker has many viewers; some are interested in nickeled "display" pistols...

Value is relative...a search of completed auctions will give you some idea...

I would like to see the front of the holster.

Looks like a 1879 Reichsrevolver holster to me. Probably worth darned near as much as the gun.

Sam, Does the bottom of the magazine match the serial's on the pistol?

Sam, Yes..The CLIP as it is commonly known... is correctly called a Magazine. There is NO clip on a Luger pistol.

Take a look on the bottom and see what is stamped there. It would make a small difference if the pistol's serial number is there. Also it would be interesting to see a photo of the magazine out of the pistol to see the steel body.

It's odd that the toggle and the sight is not chromed on this pistol. The bluing is so good on these parts it's a shame they chromed the rest.

To actually answer your questions...I think the pistol would bring $600-800 dollars depending on how fast you want to sell it.

The holster depends on photo's of the front and there are much more knowledgable people to comment on it than I.

I believe it's original. It's been with the gun for over 60 years that my mother remembers.

Any guesses as to what the gun and holster are worth? one local gun shop offered me $1,000. That seems low to me but I don't know by how much.

If the gun shop offered you $1000 for the gun alone, that is a fairly good deal for you. If the $1000 offer incuded the holster, then it isn't quite as good of a deal. The holster is for an 1879 Reichsrevolver and I am guessing it might fetch in the neighborhood of $400 +/- by itself.

Is the flap on this holster cut down in any way or is that scalloped back correct?

It was $1000 for everything. I was hoping to sell the gun and holster for $1350. Is this a fair price?

The holster has not been cut down or otherwise modified as far as I can tell from the external views.

Others may disagree, but I think it is a quite fair price.

I don't know anything about the holster but $1000 for a "tastefully" plated all-matching artillery seems very fair. (at least in my neck of the woods.)

From what I can see the gun doesn't appear to have been heavily buffed before plating and the plating looks be quality work still in good condition.

I actually kinda like the two-tone look. I'd give $1000 for it. :)

(A quick poke around the internets shows that Ron is correct, that holster appears to be just what he says and does indeed appear to quite valuable separate from the Luger.)
