An unforgettable visit
Hey Guys,
I have to share this with you. As you can tell from my profile, I live in south Louisiana, but I have a son who lives in Atlanta. My wife and I are spending a few days visiting here in Atlanta, and this morning I set out to do a little pawn shopping. Well, would you believe that my first stop was my last. I asked the owner if he happen to have a Luger he might want to sell. His reply was, he had one but had no idea what price to ask. I offered to take a look and give him an idea what it might be worth. He came out with a brown holster in beautiful condition. Inside was a 1940 dated 42 code Luger with black plastic grips with a matching correct mag and a take down tool proofed to the pistol. The luger is not a police or an import, but completely matching and all original 98% finish. I am still at my son's house, so I will have to post pictures later. OH how much? CHEAP!!! |
Mike, Those who ask..receive! Congratulations! Can't wait to see your treasure.

OK guys, I tired my best, but it seems nothing is going right tonight. I drove back from Atlanta today and very anxious get these pictures on. But as luck will have it, anything that could go wrong did. I borrowed a very cheap camera, so excuse the poor quality. The Luger actually looks nearly new, but the pictures do it no justice.
To BOGEYB: So you live in Atlanta, and you want to know which pawn shop? Well, it is the one across the tracks. Also, I have had some discussion away from the forum concering the black plasic grips on a 1940 dated 42 code. According to Mr.Still, 2% were so equipped. Besides if you look at the picture of the underside of grips, you can see they are very dirty. I actully had to remove a spiderweb from one. The Luger was stored in the holster with the mag out of the pistol, making a perfect entrance for dirt and insects. And it was quite a task to just remove the grips. I had to very carefully pry them off with a thin blade knife. This coupled with the fact that the original loading tool was still in place, says something about originality. Many thanks for the replies and interest. Mike |
It reminds us all that there are some treasures out there if we just keep looking.

Mike,
Can I shoot it? ;) |
Super nice. I was born too late, it's the first time that I heard German stuffs in this shape could be very cheap.
|
Alvin,
It was only cheap when I bought it. It ain't cheap now. Mike |
Hi Mike, CONGRATS!! The grips look like they were made for a Krieghoff!! See Gibsons Book!
Keep smiling - Looks nice to me!! |
I concur with Frank... Great buy there Mike!... and the grips were made for Krieghoff!
|
The grips were made for whoever would buy them. Mauser was authorized by the army in 1939 to secure ersatz plastic grips for the P08's when shipments of walnut grips were interupted. Very, very few show up on '39 Lugers and then in 1940, while still rare, they are a bit more common. Brown plastic grips were also used in 1940.

What I great find! I loved the gun and your story about how you got it.
Congratulations, Douglas |
Great find indeed!
