need advice first: 1917 Luger
Hi all,
New to the forum, and also to Lugers other than general knowledge. I just came into possession of a 1917 Luger. All the parts seem to be matching...either marked 53 or 3753. I did not take it fully apart as I don't know how, but I poked around a bit and it seems to be in decent condition with no rust and only a wee bit of pitting. I only started doing research last night so I'm not exactly down with terms...but I'm thinking it could stand to be "re-blued" or used as a regular shooter? Comes with the original clip, which is still fully loaded. Also came with a holster but its not like the black ones I've seen on the web...the holster is brown and is marked "Audley, Patented October 12, 1913). I do need to sell it as the proceeds will go to myself and a second party...otherwise I would love to keep it til I'm old and in need of nursing home money, lol. I've never sold a gun before...or even had a gun in my possession for that matter, so not sure where to start. Attaching some pics...any input or interest would be welcomed... oh, the pics are clickable thumnails...so click on them to see the full size versions... |
Welcome to the forum. I moved this to the New Collector area, as it is required to post a price in the for sale section.
I would guess $600-$800 for the 1917, it looks in okay shape except for the barrel. Your Audley holster is worth from $50-$100 by itself. Ed |
thanks for moving it ed! wasn't sure where to go.
|
Jackson, it could be worth more, always hard to tell, and also if it is all matching, etc....

i'll try to take some better pictures tomorrow...the light in my apartment is rather challenging.

[QUOTE=Jackson.00;158244]Hi all,
I do need to sell it as the proceeds will go to myself and a second party...otherwise I would love to keep it til I'm old and in need of nursing home money, lol. I've never sold a gun before...or even had a gun in my possession for that matter, so not sure where to start. Given this statement and the items in the background of some of your photos I don't think I would want to be the customer in your first gun sale. |
george i hope thats a joke, but since this is the internet its always so hard to tell.
what you are looking at in the background are historic artifacts from architecturally and socially significant state psychiatric hospitals which are now demolished, or on their way to being demolished. i am a history nerd, with a special interest in mental health/psychiatric history...as that is also my line of work. probably not the best background for a gun without the full story, ha ha...but again, the lighting in my apartment is challenging and the ancient wheelchair its sitting on is right under the window. |

I, for one, am all in favor of his finding a buyer for it...quickly... :D |
wow postino, you are ever so clever with your wording and face icons. thanks for contributing such valuable and insightful information to my info-seeking thread.
|
john and ed...thank you so much for your help so far! you are great moderators!
i would love to hear from any massachusetts residents who know the law and wouldn't mind helping to guide me through the process of selling. as i am a law abiding citizen i do not want to go about finding this luger a new home the wrong way, and I know that massachusetts is a bit strict with their gun laws. if people are still distracted by the state hospital towels in the background of my photos, i will be happy to just take the photos down so the purpose of my thread can be better focused on rather than a bunch of old hand towels. sometimes you have to turn off the tv to get the kids to pay attention to what your saying, right? |
You should be contacted within the next couple of days via email by someone who can help. Let me know if you are not...
|
Please do not reblue the pistol.

*I* think the towels + Luger are funny... :D I'm in NY, not MA, or I'd be interested...but it's a long drive (8 1/2 hours; just picked up a rescued dog in White Plains a few months back)... You might try a post on Jan Still's forum, too...Might be some Mass residents on that one... Although most of them have no sense of humor either... |
awww...thumbs up to you for rescuing a dog! my gf has a raggedy lil rescue dog that i love (never thought i'd be such a sucker for one of those tiny girly dogs)...trying to convince both of them that there is room in the house for a rescued beagle or basset, ha ha.
i'll check out jans forum, thanks man. |

If the gun was registered in Massachusetts before 10/21/1998, you can sell it to a Massachusetts LTC (a.k.a. "permit") holder, fill in a state form (available from town police, asking firearm transaction form) and mail it to the address as printed on it. If the gun was not registered before that date (or buyer is not Mass resident), buyer's FFL or tranferring FFL is required. Since the buyer is FFL holder, he/she knows what to do. Either way, make sure you get the money. Law does not care that. You do. |
