not my brightest and best moment!
 

I finally got to go to an indoor range, and I shot my luger.
I shot, so, I was happy.
But using the Winchester white box rounds, it jammed a lot. I used one original mag, one unknown, unmarked aluminum mag, 2 KKK white metal wood bottom, and two mec-gar mags. All jammed, but theone I liked the least, a blued steel, wood bottomed, 7 round (KKK?) mag worked perfectly everytime.

The sad part though was when I canme home and cleaned the weapon, I noticed the front sight was missing. Now, it proves my sight picture was not too good. My excuse was wearing saftey glasses meant my reading glasses couldn't fit, and for some reasn, I could hardly see the sight anyway.

The range found the sight (THANK YOU!) and I have a question- how do I keep it one the next time I shoot??

Patrickm This is a dovetail slot and I have used Locktight before. It's a thread goo meant to keep bolts in. As I understand it there are 3 strengths. Look into that for an easy fix. Other than that you could shim it..or go to a good gunsmith to see what he could do.

I thought of lite tight, but given my preformance with losing the sight, I thought it best to ask. I have not yet gotten over the moment of silence when I called the range officer and asked about locating a front sight which had fallen off at some point in my shooting.

A very simple and easy way.

Disassemble your Luger. Clamp the barrel in a padded vice. Use a piece of cylindrical steel approximately twice the width (diameter)or larger of the sight dovetail. A 1/2" drive ratchet/socket set extension works good.

Lay the cylindrical piece of steel so that it rests parallel across, and evenly on the edges of the dovetail. Tap it gently with a small hammer. This a "Try and Fit" procedure, don't get too heavy handed.

This will peen the edges of the dovetail down ever so slightly and will create a firm grip on the sight. If done correctly it won't be visible.

Here are a couple of photos of what I mean. Just be sure to hold the steel in place firmly with your other hand. And tap Lightly, it doesn't take much. Hit it too hard, and you could chip the dovetail or peen it too far.

One tap...finger press the sight in for fit. Tap again...try the sight for fit. Once the sight starts in and meets resistance and won't go all the way with finger pressure? You should be there...tap the sight into place with a brass or nylon drift punch.

If you can't push it out with finger pressure, it should stay in place.

Ron, Thanks for the good tip! I have a Luger I am going to try that on...Of course there are some people who are not so handy.

Partick, if you shoot Lugers much you will be looking over the range for more parts so get used to it.

I've used this method hundreds of times over the years. It was taught to me by one of the best all around general gunsmiths I've ever seen. He's kind of a local legend , known for the beautiful work that he did.

It's very simple even for "Handy Impaired" people. The trick is little by little and gently.

My Dee (a neat freak) once decided to do me "a favor" and clean my work bench. It took me a year to find half of my tools. We now have an agreement.

Ron, I'll do you one better..Last Summer I left for 2 weeks ..Ellie completely stripped my leather shop, installed new benches, drawers..the whole enchilada. After the mess I left I thought she had changed it into a hospital operating room... I was some time getting it organized to say the least. Wives will do some strange things to surprise you!
