byf 41 luger info

I inherited the following luger from my father. I do not know much about it, but the markings on the top have byf 41. What value would this gun sell for? Would this be a commercial or war production arm?

Looks like a nice one. Should have proof stamps on the right side.

Hello kj4, Welcome to the Luger Forum. As Marc said, it's a Military Mauser made in 1941. To give you more information, please provide the serial number on the front of the frame, just below the barrel. It will usually consist of a number and a letter just below the number. Also, on the right side there are some stampings. There are two eagle over a number and another eagle. I can't read the number under the eagles, but they are either 135 or 655 or one of each.

As to value, much better pictures are necessary AND you must be able to tell if the external AND internal parts are matched to the pistol. But we can get there after we see the pictures.

Good Luck!

Thanks Frank, the number under the eagles are 655 and the serial is 98XX it also has two markings one looks like an X and the other a cursive u. Regards, AL

kj4, Okay, now that's a start!! NOW it's most important to get a really good picture of the serial number. Don't be bashful about supplying the full number. We do it heree all the time. I'm looking forward to see the photo.

Here you are Frank, what do you make of it?

kj4, Okay that's great. First, your Luger was completed about July 1941. It was then given to a soldier that was sent to the Russian Front. It was later confiscated by the Russians. It was dipped in a preservative (Blue) and stored. Probably after the collapse of the USSR, it was sold to the US gun dealers and then sold here.

The 98XXu serial number gives the approximate production date and the big "X" indicates it's Russian involvement.

These Russian Capture (RC) Lugers are considered "shooters" and are worth less than a "collectable". If all the internal and external numbers match, that is the XX in the serial number, it's value is about $500.

Hope this helps!

wow i didnt know about the X pistols not being worth much. i've seen guys trying to sell these for 1500-2000.

Silvereagle29 02-26-2009 01:44 AM

As Frank says, $500 may be "big bucks" for a Russian import. These are only "shooters" and have no value to a Luger colletor. The "X" on the frame kills it. In addition, The finish is not Mauser. Sorry better luck next time.

Thanks for the help. I was able to sell it for $825.
