Newbie with the Devil's Gun?
 

Hello folks,

Being new to this particular forum, I figured I would start off with something I believe to be unique.

I have come to possess my first Luger. From what I've learned from this forum and other resources I have the following information to share:

The Luger is a "byf" with a "41" above the chamber. Possibly Mauser manufactured in 1941?

The bore gauge is marked "8,82" below the barrel.

The suffix is an "a".

The grips are black plastic (bakelite). Possibly a "black widow"?

The parts all have the matching last two digits of the serial number which begs for the last bit of info...the serial number........

It is "666" with the "a" suffix of course!!!

What the hell do I make of this? Obviously, any information that could be obtained would prove to be invaluable when it comes time to display/sell this piece.

I will post pics soon so as to defer any doubts.

Hi,

You have a Mauser(byf)produced in 1941. It has been coined "Black Widow" by a collector/dealer as a marketing gimic, due to the black bakelite grips. Your was the 666th pistol produce in the second production, or "a" suffix block of 10,000 pistols.

Welcome to the forum.

We'd like to gently steer other collectors away from using the term B---k W----w. It really is a made up gimic to over charge or boost the cost on the above mentioned item.

My advise is to send it to me for immediate trip to a priest for proper disposal. :)

i assume tounge in cheek, as its just the 666th gun made, the germans did not skip serial number 3, 7 or 13, all (bad luck in some cultures), so....

Thank you so much for the feedback. It has been, without doubt, a conversation piece and then some.

I am in the process of attempting to determine the history of the guns' travel to the United States. Currently, I am waiting on a response from the widow of the owner who received it from his grandfather. This is as much as I know right now.

The information I've obtained thus far has been from this forum and a few texts, however, I am unfamiliar with acceptance marks and the GDR takedown lever difference. I did read the link, but am unable to determine whether or not this adds value or is simply an indifferent variant. My ballpark on this gun is in the 1400-1700 range.

Does this make sense?

The GDR takedown levers are a different shape than the originals. The non origianal TD lever makes it mismatched and would devalue it. The original TD was numbered. It's such an interesting serial# though, so I don't know how much. I think your still in the ballpark with your price, but if it were all original, quite a bit more.

As many of you know by now, the time has come to part with this pistol.

I have responded to numerous individuals thus far from the board and continue to do so. I will not tie up bandwidth nor posts with any more additional pics as I've been asked for specific shots and find it easier to send them out directly via e-mail.

It is my preference at this time to sell the gun to a sincere Luger collector and hence this post without a gun auction in cyberland.
