Code 42 Plastic grips

1942 Mauser Code 42 #4332n

I got a Code 42 Luger in today and I have a few questions about It. First and foremost is the Plastic grips. They are not the usual plastic you see. When I first saw them I thought they were wood grips that were oil soaked. They appear to be made by making a mold of a pair of wooden grips and filling it with black plastic. Any input would be appreciated.

Second, The gun has all matching numbers including the mag. I notice that the two digit numbers all have a strong 3 followed by a weak 2 that is a bit high. Is this normal for 1942 production or is this another rework. the bottom of the mag has the four digit number but no n. The mag also has WaA stamped on it in 2 locations on the aluminum bottom and no markings on the gray steel shell.

The big question.... Do I have to put this one away or do I have a really nice shooter.

Thank,

Lynn

Your grips are a low quality reproduction set that have been molded by the very process you have described. they are not original to the gun. Please post a few more photos of all areas where serial numbers and part numbers appear. Please make sure they are in sharp focus and as reflectionless as possible. I believe that at least some parts of your gun have been renumbered...

Certainly the firing pin is renumbered. There is a flat spot where the old one was removed. The right side of the chamber has the faint image of two of the eagle over 135 stamps. This leads me to the conclusion that I have a good looking shooter.

Thanks,
Lynn

Your mag bottom has definately been renumbered and with some of the other serials peened or altered, I'd say "A nice shooter". TH

42-42??

In reading the latest posts to the discussion in the posting above this posting, makes me wonder if the toggle should not be a BYF and not a 42. Any thoughts?

Lynn,
You're correct it should be byf. The toggle has been poorly ground and restamped. The front of the frame has also been ground. Looks like a shooter to me.
