New Member here

Hi Guys,
I'm new to Lugers but not to collecting. I've been collecting milsurps for the last 6 or 7 years and really enjoy doing so. I've met so many good people involved in our hobby. So I want to thank you for allowing me to join yet another facet of collecting. Now to the first question: I have a chance to purchase a bringback luger. All numbers match on the pistol. The magazines don't match. ( I got the story why but I won't bore you guys right off the bat) The biggest problem I can find is the pistol fires the first round then ejects correctly. The toggle then stops about 1/4" short of returning to battery. What do I have to do to correct this?
Thanks in advance.

Is the gun clean and well lubed ? what ammo are you using ? lets start with the easy items to check.....welcome

Welcome.
Lugers are known to be "ammo sensitive", so most likely that is the problem. Magtech 115grs has worked well for me, and I´m sure other members will let you know what have worked best for them also.
Not enough lube or "limp wrist" could also be part of the problem. I have found mine to do this if I dont hold it tight enough.

The only ammo I saw with the Luger (I didn't get it yet) was WWB. It is clean by the way.

Is the extractor clean and moving freely ?, is the chamber clean of dirt/rust ?.....just trying to trouble shoot with out my crystal ball....you did not state where you are located, perhaps we can find a member near by who is willing to help.....

The WWB should work fine. Do a serious clean & lube, and you've eliminated lots of potential problems.

Welcome to the forum, I have found magazines are the worst offenders....

Ed, when it 1/4" short of battery, by then the mag has done its job.....I suspect a rusted/dirty extractor or chamber in need of a polishing......

This sound like a weak recoil spring to me. TH

Thanks Guys,
I live in Northern Michigan. The guy that has the pistol said it worked fine in the past until he allowed some "genius" to clean it for him. When it was returned this is how it functioned. Here's the rest of the story: He said he has no interest in collecting Milsurps including this luger his father brought back. He told me yesterday that if I get him a Blackhawk .357 he'll swap me for the Luger. I don't own a Luger so I thought I may as well do this. What do ya think? I do have some k98's so it would be a nice addition if I can get it running correctly again.

THe gun is well worth the price of a .357 Blackhawk.....

Go and get that Luger. This problem should be easy resolved and no reason to let that stay in the way, or keep you from geting this pistol.

btw. Check if the firing pin moves freely. As you describe the problem the front moovement of the toggle seems to stop as the firing pin reach the sear. The pin is supposed to stop there, but the breechblock to keep on all the way to battery.

I'll see the guy on Friday. We can work a deal then. When I get it I'll post pics and see what you guys think.

good advice! get the Luger and I'm sure we can walk you thru the fix.
If not there are a number of very good Luger smiths on the board that you can send it to.

Jim
