New to .30 luger, having trouble with my load... Help!

I'm having trouble with my .30 Luger load. I'm running new Win. brass from midway, win primers, Speer .308 100gr plinkers, on top of 4.5grs of Unique. My problem is that no matter what I do the bullet will not properly seat into the case. I get it to the correct overall length, & crimp. After doing this, a single tap to the bullet and it falls into the case. I'm kinda at a loss on what to do. If it helps the gun is a re-blued '20 commercial I picked up at work for 2 bills.
Thanks

Hi:

Sounds like your dies have a .311 expander in them. Measure it to find out. Your die maker should be able to provide you with a proper diameter expander. Frankly, I'd rather shoot .311 to.312 bullets through a Luger.

Correct O.A.L. should be 1.173 inches (with round nose bullets), as shorter lengths will cause jamming in the magazine (forget what the reloading manuals say).

Also, your load sounds too light to properly operate the action. Take it up 1/10th of a grain untill you can shoot an entire magazine of 8 without any jamming.

How about cast bullets......

I have the same problem with any jacketed .308 bullet in my 8 inch .30 caliber. I find that cast bullets (110 gr. flat nose) work well with 4.8gr. Unique.

Hi:

I'm curious, do you buy your bullets or roll you own?

I've been looking for a good T.C. (flat nose) 7.65 bullet for some time know.

Would you share your source or mold maker.

Thanks!

The .312 Hornady 100 gr XTP bullets work great in every .30 I've loaded them for. They are very accurate.

Okay guys, I ditched to Speer Plinkers (loaded .30 Mauser with em instead) Went down to the dealer, they didnt have any .311 XTP but they did have the .309 XTP's in 90gr. I was able to seat and crimp these bullets with great success! I used 5 grs of Unique and am hoping this load will work for me. Thanks for the help guys.
