Members Gallery

Need some help here. :(

When I try to access the "members Gallery" it asks for an ID and password but it doesn't seem to accept the ID and password I use to access the Message Board.

Can someone explain this to me?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated

The member Gallery is a separate piece of software Robert... you must register to use it separately from your forum registration.

Members Gallery

John;

Where can I find more info on what the Members Gallery offers, in order to make an informed decision regarding applying.

I would also appreciate knowing how to apply if interested.

Best Regards;

John,

I've often wondered what was required also. All I can find is a Login button. No place to Register.

Hey Robert, John, Ron.. (Did I leave anyone out?? ;) )...

OK - the Gallery is a high end Gallery - and John S. is right - it's a different piece of software on my servers... HOWEVER - when I upgraded the Forum to the new servers and the software, I also added "Albums" - which is a "user friendly" gallery and image hosting.... The albums DO utilize your Forum username/password - and are pretty simple...??

Let me know if any of you need an assist on using either - or this is confusing, OK???

Best to you!

John;

I don't think you answered the question on how to use the "Members Gallery".

I do know how to use the Album facility, but I wanted to check out all the options on the main web page.

Can you answer how to register for the Members Gallery, and where to access info regarding its contents and protocols?

Hey Robert!

Sorry about that..! I can set you up with an account on the Gallery if you'd like..?? When you have a second - just Private Message me the password you'd like to use, OK?? I turned off the "self registration" for various reasons over the past years - but, it's no problem to get you set, OK??

Best to you!

Robert, the album feature is better, not sure why you feel the member gallery is better?

Sometimes change is for the good.

It isn't a matter of which is better or worse, it is how either is utilized. The member gallery was a showcase, usually consisting of pretty well organized photos of guns or accessories having a theme. The album feature, so far, has been an odd mix of gallery type photos and random bits and pieces of no particular connection. It seems like it is being used by folks to try their hand at learning to post photos or to display images that would be more properly placed in a thread or post with a relevant question or comment.

By the way, this post just timed out on me and I wasn't typing particularly slowly. Had to copy what I had written and then log in again.

Ron, I agree, however and this is just my opinion, but I just feel that many of these old legacy (read they have to be manully messed with by John) should be phased out and folks get used to the new.

All of the old legacy on that tool bar on the left; neither John S or me can help folks, so it falls to John; that seems silly to me.

Don't get me wrong, I like the album capability and do not feel it is necessary for John to go to the trouble of restoring the old gallery capability. I just would like to see the albums take on a little of the flavor of the old gallery such as putting lables on each photo to identify the gun or what the photo is illustrating. That is what made the old gallery educational and a good reference source.

Hi John D;

I appreciate your offer to set me up on the "Members Gallery", but after reading the comments from everyone else, I learned a few things.

If the "members Gallery" is "legacy" and requires more administration assistance, I don't think it would be great for the forum.

That being said, I was more interested in learning about the features it offered in order to determine if was a better than the "Album" tool. What features does it offer?

I set up an Album for myself, but I find the Album facility far more cumbersome in accessing other peoples album material. It would be nice to be able to sort the facility inexed by owner and subject matter, etc. If this capability exists, excuse my ignorance. The Forum menu doesn't seem to advise on this capability.

Just some thoughts...

Best Regards;

Robert, try clicking on ALL Albums at the top of the page and it shows everyones albums that have been submitted.

Ron, these albums can have captions and description, it is all up to whomever loads them, just like the forum member gallery.

Albums are better than the member gallery.

I know that on threads / posts you can put "tags" then the item can be searched for those tags (word searches), I am unsure if it will also show albums. This requires a bit more work from the individual user, but in the long run it pays off.

Ed;

Yes, All Albums get me there, but there doesn't appear to be any search capability. It's really not a problem at this stage, because there are not that many Albums posted .

Thanks folks

Edward Tinker 01-09-2009 02:26 PM

Not everything is as easy as you'd like, sorry.

John D. 01-09-2009 03:04 PM

Isn't that for sure!! OK - here are a few basic differences...

Albums are tightly integrated into the Forum code - so a single login allows anyone to view/post/upload/etc... As well - as simple as the albums appear - here is what happens on my servers... When you upload the photo, my servers/software resizes it for you, processes the picture and then adds it to your "Album".. From there - images are redrawn from my server for a clients browser - and expanded/contracted using either highslide/lightshade.. For that - again - you have "control" of your album contents integrated into your album(s) - including the ability to tag or add comments.. As well - if someone makes a comment - you can option whether to receive an e-mail notification through the Forum software...

That's Albums in a nutshell....

The Gallery is totally different - both in architecture and capabilites - and no - it is not integrated into the Forum software (although I've tried).. Gallery is all the features of Albums, except on steroids.. I use it for example - as I do advanced photography - so one of my "Galleries" is here:
http://reutterwerk.com/gallery2/main.php

The features - for me at a personal level - are far more robust - but are somewhat silly given if I only wanted to "share" pictures amongst a closed forum.. That - coupled with the separate admin aspect..

As well - I also run host an altogether different Album/Gallery technology on one of my other sites - WHICH is integrated into the Forum login/software called Photopost - but again - most folks on that forum use the Albums - as they are simple.. To see Photopost - click here:

http://reutterwerk.com/photos/

But again - I'm the one left coding and supporting these architectures - and for most users - both Gallery and Photopost are difficult to use for an occasional user...?

Hope this helps!

John D.

Ed,
I am aware that the album photos can have captions, I put them on mine. I would encourage others to add captions. It gives newbies (and oldtimers) a leg up on knowing what they are looking at.
John D.,
I am a simple kind of guy, so albums are perfectly OK for me:thumbup:

Edward Tinker 01-09-2009 03:59 PM

??

Guess I will stay out of this, cuz you said
Quote:

and that is what the captions are for.....

Ron Wood 01-09-2009 05:42 PM

Ed,
We are in violent agreement...I just initially used the wrong word, I should have written "captions" instead of "lables".:)

Ron tried to send message twice, and would not take it, Larry
