Virginia Transfer help
Appreciate help. I live in NJ and want to transfer a pistol to My son who lives in Va. Does anyone know what is required?
Thanks Mike |
Just give it to him. There is no registration in Virginia...now.

I am not sure.
Pistols acrossing state line is supposed to go though FFL unless it's pre-1899 antique. But I am not sure the father-son relationship makes any difference or not.... probably not... The gun could be free, but FFL is not supposed to be skipped. |
Legally you are probably right, if shipped. If I was "home" in WA and dad gave me a gun, I'd now own it and bring it straight to PA with me, as we don't have to register anything here unless it goes through a gunshop for a purchase or gunshow (just as you don't in Virginia), so there would not be a need for transfer of anything...

First, I apologize for my stubborness.
I don't know NJ state law. Let's assume Mike's son returns to NJ visiting parents, can he receive a gun privately at home in NJ? That depends on NJ state law. If the state law prohibits private transaction, then he cannot receive a pistol on the soil of NJ. Sounds like the gun must be carried to VA to hand over privately if FFL is bypassed.... strictly speaking.... ==== If NJ also requires "unregistering" after a gun being sold or given away, then it's even more complex. To whom you sold, what's the FFL#, what's the date, etc, etc |
