Portuguese M2 Question

Hello,

I have the chance to pick up a M2 luger from a estate sale and I would like some advice regarding value. It has DWM and M2 and a crown on the top and that is all the markings. The serial number on the frame is in the 2000 range and the barrel in 4.75" but has a 2100 range number. Blueing is same on the whole gun and appears to be original with consistant wear. It also has a holster with cleaning rod on front edge. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Thank You

D,
The serial #'s should match. The original barrel may have been damaged and changed long ago. Does the barrel have the same 'triangle in circle' proof as the left receiver and rear of the frame? If it does, it is at least an M2 barrel. Unfortunately it's a shooter, although a very unusual one. Most shooters are $500-$750 range, but with the M2 on the chamber I'm sure you could get more. The holster and cleaning rod, if original, $400- $600. All depends on condition of course.

The barrel has a star or crown and a U below the numbers. 3 marks on top of each other.
crown looks like the same one on the top just smaller. and a U under the crown.

Thanks
David

Mike,

The holster has 3E and another 3 bolew that stamped in the back.
cleaning rod in front and a large flap. double belt hoops above the flap attached to rear of holster. looks to be un-modified.

thanks

Hi Forest

Pete has a nice M2 in the Member Gallery SN 2866 that you can look at, page 8 on my computer, its a very nice example of an M2 and slide 6 shows you exactly what your guns barrel should look like.

Your barrel has been replaced, are you looking for an answer to what it came from. or just confirming its not original to you gun?

Sounds like the holster is for the GNR luger if so a semi rare holster.

Hello Vern,

I am wondering why It would be replaced and what the proof marks on the barrel can tell me...if anything. The gun looks very uniform with color and wear. all numbers are correct except the barrel number. I did buy the gun today and hope I made a decent move, It is my first luger.

Thanks

What is a GNR Holster?

Thanks

Forest

Attached is a picture of a Portuguese GNR barrel, that sounds like what your describing.

Is this what your seeing?

Also, is there a script "V" on the frame below the serial number?

Gunman,
You are correct...It is a GNR Holster, I just seen one on the simpson web page. Thanks....
Well that rules out the original holster idea. Is the holster worth more than the gun?....lol

thanks

forest 12-21-2008 04:47 PM

Vern,

Yes that is the same marks.

Thanks

Vern,

There is no "V" that I see in the frame below the numbers.

Thanks

The M2 dates 1909/10 made by DWM the GNR 1935/36 made by Mauser, they remained in service until the 60's. We sometimes see mixing of parts on all Portuguese variations. They didn't see them as collectibles and did what was required to keep them in service.

Should you have bought the gun? That depends on what the asking price was and your desire to own it.

There are currently several M2's available for sale, and with the current market more will follow I am sure of it. You did the right thing in asking before your bought--every Luger purchase should be made with eyes wide open and an informed decision.

Hope all of this helps

Thanks Vern,

I am Glad to own a Luger, Like a piece of art and history. What do you value the gun at?

forest 12-21-2008 06:03 PM

Vern,

The holster is a GNR, can you tell me more about it?

Thanks

Pictures, pictures, pictures

No one can value of your rig without pictures.

You must know by now I collect Portuguese Lugers, I am constantly on the look out for M2 magazines. If you happen to have two of them and wish to part with one ( circle triangle) on the bottom I can make that deal you made even better. PM me if your interested. :)

Holsters are tough and at least as complicated as the guns themselves, there are a couple of experts on the forum and should be able to help you determine originality and value--they will need picture too.
