Another newb with unk P08, pls help!
 

I bought this pistol in the mid 80's and gave it to a gunsmith who just gave it back yesterday!!. I forgot everything about it, can you please help me identify it?. I also need a barrel as the chamber is very worn out. any and all help would be great. Thanks. DK

There are no known LP-08 pistols dated 1913. The barrel on your pistol should have the serial number on the bottom, near where it meet the frame. It should be a different number then the one on the frame. The top of the receiver is not cut to accomodate the tangent rear sight, because there is no tangent sight on this pistol.

The barrel appears to be a replacement.

OK, not an LP08, I only know it as a luger!. The barrel/upper receiver has the same s/n on it as the rest of the pistol, no replacement , at least for the part that holds the barrel. I saw no serial number on the barrel itself. So what kind of luger/pistol is it?, at least it is a matching number gun.

This appears to be a heavily buffed and rusty 1913 DWM Luger with a long aftermarket barrel. Collector value is zero although it could become a good shooter with a little TLC. I do not understand your need for a new barrel because "the chamber is very worn out." Ordinarily the chamber should never wear out. However, new barrels of standard length or longer are available and easy to have replaced (see Lugerdoc on the forum). KFS

Eustace, welcome to the forum. An original artillery barrel would have an artillery sight, yours does not.

It should also have the serial number and a # such as 8,82 on the bottom of the barrel.

A "normal" witness marking would be in the middle, best way to see it is to do a search here on the forum for "witness markings".

This 1913 p08 is only fit for shooting as is or selling as parts. In my opinion no money should be spent on it at all.

Jeez George, a tad harsh!. Kinda like saying " that kid is ugly, forget about collage, just put it to sleep!!". Value be damned, I just like the pistol and will gladly spend a little cash on it. What I said about the chamber is exactly the case, where the brass of the round is when a round is chambered, it is oversize and the brass balloons when fired, so a new barrel is needed. I paid $200 for it some years ago so I think for a matching number gun (minus barrel), it is not too bad.

Sure looks like a barrel witness mark + alignment mark on that 5th picture, but on that last picture it looks more like the signature of bubba's pipe wrench. With a new P08 barrel, it would be a fairly nice Luger for making holes in paper. You may also want to look into replacing the take down lever if it hurt your eyes, personally I would not care.

I think this gun has some potential as a project gun. George is correct that the collector value disappeared many years ago. But for that price you can certainly afford to play with it a bit.

With a fresh barrel and a reblue job, this gun can have a lot of fun shooter years ahead of it.

Now tacfoley, you play nice!. It was not your info or opinion that irked me, it was your tone. Not being an american, you are forgiven, esp since english is your 3rd language. As a Bavarian , I find most northern germans to be very cut and dry, like your comments on that other post. I just did not expect the collecter snobbish tone (unintended I am sure) that came across. To me implements like guns, motorcycles and all fun mechanical things we collect should be used, so I was just caught off guard by the collecter tone.

Now it all makes sense!. a brit??, well either by birth or address, I bet your angry about losing your guns. Me?, I would have started a revolt!!.

hmpf.. just an hour flight away from norway.. guess our ranges is not good enough eh? Or is it based upon bad experiences from hairy, smelly, drunken vikings waving around with their axes - stealing gold and women?

As previously mentioned, you're more than welcome to the sunny southwestern coast of Norway. Not only is it more scenic than Oslo and eastern Norway, we also have prettier women and better beer. Oh, I almost forgot - better ranges as well.

It has been brought up before, but it would have been great to meet up some day, shoot and brag of our lugers + have a taste from the local orchard or bathroom brewery
