I'm pretty excited about my Luger-pictures added

I am getting pretty excited about my Luger. Someone gave me one years ago, but I had forgottten about it. I recently found it. It needed a couple of parts, which are on the way and hopefully it will be all set by the weekend.

It's a 1917 Erfurt. Not collectible, but almost all the parts have the matching numbers and it's in pretty good shape. I'll post some pictures one it's ready.

As of now I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about them. Thanks for a great site.

Has this Luger been refinished? The edges look not sharp to me.

Greeneye 09-17-2008 06:18 PM

It has not been refinished.

Greeneye - Your luger does appear to have been refinished. In orginal condition the takedown lever, trigger, safety, and magazine catch would have been strawed (light golden / honey brown color). From your photos, they appear to be blue which would indicate that your luger has been refinished. The ejector also appears to be the purple color that comes from being blued, whereas originally it was also straw color.

JD,

I think it is the lighting in the photos that make the small parts look blued. I believe that they are actually still strawed.

That said, I also believe that the gun was refinished at some point in its life because the sharp edge lines, and edges of the stamps in many places have been softened or buffed so that they no longer appear sharp.

The sideplate is also unnumbered and this would be an abberation from normal Erfurt production.

Erfurts are always great to see. It should have all kinds of inspection marks on the outside as well as inside. Have fun finding them all and let us know how it shoots once you have it together!

Greeneye 09-18-2008 11:03 PM

I don't believe the gun was refinished. It's hard to see because I can't take a decent picture, but I've been around a lot of guns and this looks original to me. The trigger, safety and mag catch are strawed. The takedown lever was replaced and is not, and the sideplate was missing, so I had to get one, although the finish is a very close match (that was cool, but dumb luck)

I could always be wrong, but I think a lot of it has to do with the pictures. If any of you are in Florida, though, it would be cool to get an expert opinion in person, and I would much appreciate that.

In any case, I like it a lot. And the price was great-someone gave it to me because they didn't want an old gun laying around. Can't beat that.

What part of florida? There are several members there...

Martin County, just north of Palm Beach County

Greeneye,
We might be neighbors, I live in NRS which is just north of the bridge in Stuart. I'll be happy to look at your gun and I may have some of the parts you need.
