ID for this holster?
 

Hello all!

I was shopping for P38s on Gunbroker, and ran a crossed this auction. It is obviously a Luger holster (I think), but I have no expertice in Luger leather. I am sure it will take about 30 seconds for one of you Luger studs ID it! Thanks guys!

Jim, welcome to the forum.

It has the cut out for a luger like magazine, but does not have a luger tool pouch (big giveaway that it was usually not made for a luger). My first guess is that it is a p38 holster that someone modified for luger, not the other way around.

However, some post war holsters were made for either a P38 or a luger, but they usually are the softshell type.

i'd be curious to know what the markings are on the inner flap area? LPN or IPN and is that weapon or serial number rear right, both are indications of a police marking.

Thank you for the welcome! I have been lurking much longer than my Jan 08 registration date, but since I just don't have the cash for the Luger game, I am just a spectator. However, I do own a byf 42 rig I have had for 20 years which I bought back when a blue collar guy could afford them.

What made me think it was a Luger holster in the auction, was the typical mag cutout and the pull strap (which appears to be broken on the inside?). The holster kind of reminds me of some post war P35 Browning Hi Power holsters I have seen, but the mag pouch and pull strap are wrong for that.

Plus, the construction is not a-typical German, ie a formed wrap around front sown onto a flat rear piece. This one has a body that wraps around and meets in the middle. I just don't know, that is why I came to the experts!

I would say post war German police. A lot of this style were made for the Browning High Power. Can't tell from the picture but the Browning would have a thick mag pouch. I have owned a couple of these ,both marked LPN. Bill

Bill's correct. It is a post war police holster for a Star Mod B, an Astra 600 or a Radom.

I've got two of them, and they are worth about $75. This seller is either unknowledgable or trying to put one over.

These holsters were made and sold by the major German gun houses and were indeed of a 'one size fits all' kind of affair. If the gun fits, it's good for that gun :)

You must appreciate the seller's efforts in making these photo's barefoot, though :D

Armed with the input from this great forum, I did some internet research and found a number of these holsters. Postwar German police Astra, etc. it is!

I actually like this holster, and wish I could find a nice one for sale seperately!
