new luger owner
 

Just bought a luger. I bought it to shoot, it looks to have parts from two guns. I thing the mag must be after market as there are no marking on it. I've taken it apart cleaned it up and have shot it. It has some bugs and I was hoping they may sound familiar to someone. First I don't seem to have a lock open latch on this gun. Were they ever made without this? The action will hang up on the mag once in awhile. When it does this I can give a tug on the bottom of the mag and the action will close. Thought this may be due to the missing latch. The other bug is I can not work the action with the safety on unless the firing pin is already cocked. This seems odd to me, is it normal?

welcome to the forum. Pictures or better description would help know what model your frame is and upper receiver? dates, writing, pictures, etc.

If it catches and holds open every now and then, it is probably either a worn hold open or a worn magazine and not missing

That is absolutely correct functioning. If the safety is on and the firing pin not cocked, the sear bar cannot move outward to clear the stud on the firing pin when you attempt to work the action. Once the firing pin is cocked, that is not a problem. On the earlier model Lugers before the sear bar was relieved to allow rearward travel of the receiver with the safety on, you could not work the action with or without the firing pin cocked. Relieving the sear bar allows a loaded weapon to be cleared with the safety on.

Thanks for the replies, a lot quicker than I would have imagined! I've taken some pictures, just not sure how to post them yet. The frame is stamped 1388 with what may be a R. There are lots of small stamps under the grips B,L,I,F,P,44 and G. At the front inside there is N over PPO. At the front of the frame in the grip area there is a very stylish B.R.S.1.112. The upper receiver is stamped 1938 with serial number 4575. The toggle is stamped 88 and has a very stylish mark on the center toggle link.

If you want comments on it.. you will probably hear that it's 'buffed', relbued and a mix of at least three lugers.

But it's a nice Luger, probably a great shooter and with some interesting unit markings on the frame. Congrats! (that is.. if you recently purchased it)

DES, As Ron mentioned above; pre 1916 PO8s did not have the relieve sear bar, unless reworked later. Since yours is a mismatch, I do have the relieved sears available should your desire to change it, although some fitting may be required. hellerarms@webtv.net

based on your photo of the diassembled pistol, your Luger was produced without the Holdopen feature and was never updated. That is why it doesn't stay open after the last shot.

The unit marking is an Imperial Bavarian Reserve Schutzen Regiment 1 weapon #112 unit mark. WWI frame with WWII receiver.

Well, I didn't think I bought a collectable when I bought it. Wouldn't have been disappointed to find out it was worth thousands though. I gave $350.00 for it at a private sale. Didn't know if that was good or bad but I've wanted one of these since I was a kid. It will be as much fun to shoot as my 1911. Have to get myself a tommy gun next.
Any suggestions on replacement mags?

In order of what I find the most reliable for shooting;

DDR made (in good shape) magazines
MecGar silver bodied mags (these are post-war)
WW2 mags in good shape
Any other German made pre-WW2 magazines
