Target sight preference???
 

I know a lot of issues have to be address with the P.08 before it can be made target ready, but I often wonder about the best rear sight choice? I would like to hear from others as to what their favorite sight type is, regardless if it is on a P.08 or not... Eliason, S&W target, seem to be two of the more available... What do you think guys? ...Best to all, til...lat'r...GT :confused:

This is going to be of no help at all, but the best type is/was the neat little sight from the old MMC (Miniature Machine Company) formerly of Deming, New Mexico. Unfortunately the company has moved and they no longer make that model of sight. I called them about 5 years ago to see if they had any old stock on hand, but I missed by about three months as they had cleaned out all of their old stuff to make room! (insert multiple off-color expressions of dismay here) I would have bought all they had if they were available.

There was an article in "Guns and Ammo" years ago by Skeeter Skelton that I believe was called "For the love of a long-barreled Luger". He built up a personal shooter with a long barrel and one of the MMC sights. It was a nice piece of work.

Gt, The neatest one that I've ever had was an original PO8 rear toggle link that had been neatly fitted with an Ellison fully adjustable sight in the same way as the Mauser Parabellum Target model. It's now on another member's "Armadilo" (try a search on that, as he posted a photo some time ago) luger. TH PS: I'm sending you a P38 "target" rear sight with my shipment tomorrow.

My version of target sights.........
 

Here is what started out as S/42 #90717. I traded a matched Erfurt for this mismatch back in the seventies. It has a micro rear sight attached to the rear toggle link. The barrel was turned from a .30 carbine barrel. I have mixed feelings about this piece. I don't like the way the front sight was done, it just don't look right. I wish it were 9mm because .30 luger cases are hard to come by and it's a pain to chase empties. I haven't shot this thing in years. It functions well with a stout load of Unique behind a Speer plinker or 100 gr. carbine bullet. If I knew more about posting pictures, I would have included more views. Maybe I'll figure that out later. I have thought about having it returned to original look and caliber but that is almost as expensive as one in like condition, so I'm leaving it as is. (I uploaded more pictures to Snapfish and hope they can be viewed through it).

Nice looking custom... but in the future please upload your photos only to the Lugerforum. There are primarily two reasons for this.

One is that FREQUENTLY the other sites change their structure or just go out of business and the photos are lost.

The other reason is that many businesses and government organizations block access to these public photo websites and makes your photos invisible to those who are working and check in to the forum on their lunch hour...

You can move your photos and edit your post by using the "pencil/paper" icon at the bottom right corner of each of your own postings.

There is a photo tutorial as a "sticky" at the top of the New Collector's Forum to help you along.

GT, In answer to your question, I prefer the MMC sight, it gives just as good a sight picture and is a much neater package. I'm not crazy about the Elliason sight sticking out so far in the rear.

how is the micro rear sight attached ?

soldered or held with screw or ?

I like that semi-dewey look

has the rear sight ever loosened up or come apart due to the recoil forces ?

Hugh, your rear-sight view of the Elliason rear sight picture seems to show that the front sight it too narrow for good accuracy... Have you considered a slightly wider front blade? Maybe that would make a difference in what is your 'favorite' adjustable Luger rear sight.

Bill, The Micro sight is silver soldered to the milled flat rear toggle. I have had no problem with it coming off during cycling. I haven't shot this gun in many years but am planning to take it to the range to try it's accuracy with some new reloads soon.

Hugh, That is a fine looking slab side barrel and I really like the tiger stripe grips. Beautiful piece of work.

thanks for the info on the soldered sight

it would be interesting if you have time to post a side view of the rear toggle / sight mating surfaces to see how much was milled off the toggle and whether the sight base is also machined flat or is dovetailed in any way into the toggle

has the sight blade or adjust screws loosened up at any point ?

does the sight body look original or narrowed to fit the width of the toggle ?
